"In commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the Great Storm, Galveston on Saturday earned the world record for the longest uninterrupted walkway as thousands of people lined up along the historic 10.3-mile long seawall," the Houston Chronicle reports.

"The seawall is a concrete barrier built along the coast to protect the city from storm surges and rising sea levels. It was constructed in the years after the Sept. 8, 1900, hurricane that killed an estimated 8,000 people, the deadliest storm to hit the U.S. To honor those lost in the natural disaster, Galveston had people gather at the seawall as a Guinness World Records adjudicator measured the length of the wall.

"Until Saturday, the world record had been held by the 4½-mile Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa, Fla."

"The Galveston Seawall was built as a response to the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, which remains the deadliest natural disaster in United States history."

"On Saturday morning along Seawall Boulevard, crowds gathered as Guinness World Records confirmed Galveston now holds the title for the longest walkway, a 10.3 mile stretch that was built after the 1900 storm," the Click2Houston reports.

"The celebration came as Galveston marks the 125th anniversary of that storm, which killed more than 8,000 people. It is still the worst natural disaster in American history.

"“Monday is the 125th anniversary of the great storm,” said Lyle. “The seawall was built because of that storm and it’s protected Galveston for over a hundred years. So we wanted to just come out and celebrate Galvestonian’s, bring everybody together and celebrate the seawalls.”
