"Located along Route 66 in Lincoln, Illinois, the World’s Largest Covered Wagon was built by local resident David Bentley in 2001. The project initially began as something for Bentley to do while recovering from heart surgery. He crafted the Railsplitter Covered Wagon by hand using steel and locally sourced Illinois oak. Ultimately, he completed the project to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Route 66,"  the Olio in Iowa says.

"Guinness World Records named the Railsplitter Covered Wagon the “world’s largest” after Bentley completed its construction in 2001. At the time, the World’s Largest Covered Wagon stood in front of his home in Divernon, Illinois.

"However, in 2007, local philanthropist Larry Van Bibber purchased the wagon from Bentley and donated it to the Abraham Lincoln Tourism Bureau of Logan County. It was then moved to another location in Lincoln and in 2009, came to rest at its current spot along Route 66."

"Recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the “World’s Largest Covered Wagon,” an honor that is unlikely to have a number of challengers, Illinois’ Railsplitter covered wagon is a roadside novelty driven by a titanic Abraham Lincoln," the Atlas Obscura says.

"Created in 2001 by Illinois local David Bentley, the Railsplitter began as a project to kill time during his recovery from surgery. The four-wheeled wagon is built out of steel and oak and stands an impressive 25 feet tall and 40 feet long. It is designed like a classic prairie schooner with a deep central bed and a bench at the front where the driver would command the, in this case frighteningly large, chargers.

"Sitting in the bench of the Railsplitter is none other than beloved 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, albeit a 12-foot tall, fiberglass version of the man."

"The Railsplitter Covered Wagon and giant Lincoln statue is 40-feet long, 12-feet wide and 25-feet tall. The big wagon is made of oak and steel and weighs five tons. It is officially recognized as being the world’s largest by the Guinness Book of World Records.

"This Route 66 tourist attraction was built in 2001 by local David Bentley. Originally kept on his own property on Pawnew. Larry Van Bibber bought the Railsplitter Covered Wagon in 2007 and placed it for all to see in Lincoln Illinois. It holds the official Guinness World Record for World’s Largest Covered Wagon."

"As an attraction, the Railsplitter is still relatively new. But the replica old-fashioned covered wagon pays homage to a time long since passed. It also has gained notoriety as the largest in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records,"  the Only in Your State says.

"The Railsplitter is located in the small Illinois town of Lincoln, in Logan County. Illinoisan David Bentley created the replica covered wagon in 2001, which stands a whopping 25 feet tall and measures 40 feet in length. It is located in front of a Best Western hotel.

"Abraham Lincoln, the country’s 16th president, is a centerpiece within the covered wagon. A 12-foot-tall fiberglass version of the influential leader is shown reading a book titled, “Law.” The depiction is designed to show him commandeering the wagon through the open plains."

"The world’s largest covered wagon that sits between Old Route 66 and the American Legion Post #263 was built by Lincoln enthusiast David Bentley in 2001. The wagon, which is made of oak and steel measures 40 feet long by 12 feet wide and stands 25 feet in the air and weighs five tons, is a Guinness world record holder," the Lincoln Courier says.

"Bentley, a Marine who once worked at the prison in Lincoln, said he always admired Abraham Lincoln for creating the Congressional Medal of Honor. “He signed the law giving the highest honor to those servicemen who earned it,” said Bentley.

"After a generous donation by Larry J. Van Bibber in January of 2007 the Logan County Tourism Bureau took ownership of the wagon and uses the icon to promote visits to Logan County and encourages those who travel Route 66 to stop and take a photo."
