Timonium, Maryland, United States--Handy Seafoods, one of the oldest seafood processing companies in the United States, and one of the largest crab suppliers in the U.S., broke their world record for the largest crab cake at the Maryland State Fairgrounds; weighing in at 301.5 pounds, the new giant crab cake sets the world record for being the World's Largest Crab Cake, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"Handy Seafoods is one of the oldest seafood processing companies in the United States, and one of the largest crab suppliers in the U.S. The company was established in 1894 by John T. Handy. In 1903, Handy Seafood became the first company to commercially process soft shell crabs. Beginning in 1916, the company started farming and selling oysters.

"During the 1980s, the company began shipping live soft shell crabs to Tokyo and exporting frozen soft shell crabs throughout Europe and the Pacific Rim. In 1981, the company was purchased by former Perdue Farms executive Terry Conway. His son, Todd, is now the CEO. The company is a founding member of the National Fisheries Institute Crab Council.

"In 2012, the company set the Guinness World Record for the "largest crab cake in the world" at the Maryland State Fair, weighing in at over 300 lbs. "Handy International's gigantic cake was over 3 feet in diameter and 7 1/2 inches high. It took 9 hours to cook and six men to carefully hoist the 300 pounds of crabmeat, which smoked the previous record of 253 pounds in 2009," the Delish.com says.


"The final product — made from 200 pounds of crabmeat, eggs, breadcrumbs, and seasoning — produced 584 crab cake sandwiches at the Maryland State Fair on September 1."

"Handy first set the record for largest crab cake in 2006 and then broke that record The record has been broken! Handy International, a Maryland seafood processor, broke their world record for the largest crab cake on September 1 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds. The huge 300 lb. crab cake topped their previous 2009 record by 47 lbs. Using a true Maryland-style recipe, there was a minimum of ingredients added which allowed the fresh Smith Island crab meat to be the star," the Handy Seafood says.

  • The custom made pan measured 3’ in diameter and 7 ½” deep.
  • It required 9 hours to cook the 300 lb. crab cake.
  • It took 6 strong men to lift the pan onto a certified scale to get the official weight.
  • 584 crab cake sandwiches were served and the crab cakes averaged about 7 oz.


"Handy thanks all the volunteers and staff members that helped pull off this great event! A video of the entire process (from preparing the recipe in Crisfield to cooking and serving at the Maryland State Fairgrounds) will be available on Handy’s website by September 15."

"Maryland’s Handy International, in Salisbury, broke the world record for baking the largest crab cake over Labor Day weekend.

"The company had to top the current record it set in 2011 at 253 pounds. This time around, the crab cake chefs made a larger pan that weighed as much as the ingredients themselves, according to a news release. The pan had a 3-foot diameter, was 7.5- inches deep and 210 pounds. It was designed by Handy’s Regional Sales Manager Jim Cupp," the

"What do you do after you break the world record for largest crab cake? Make a bigger crab cake, obviously. At least that's what Maryland seafood processing company Handy International did," the HuffPost.com says.


"On September 1st, Handy International demolished their own world record with a 300 pound, three-foot-wide crab cake that served a whopping 584 sandwiches to the hungry crowd at the Maryland State Fair. The cake took nine hours to cook through and generated $3,127, which was donated to the Maryland 4H Foundation."
