Omaha, Nebraska, United States--The
Desert Dome in the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska, United States,
features plant and animal life from three deserts around the world; the Desert Dome, the brainchild of Zoo Director, Lee Simmons, contains 84,000 square feet on two levels (42,000 square feet on each level); it sets the world record for being the
World’s Largest Indoor Desert, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
"The world's largest indoor desert, the Desert Dome, located under the world's largest glazed geodesic dome, has become a landmark for the city of Omaha," the official website says.
"The Desert Dome features plant and animal life from three deserts around the world: the Namib Desert of southern Africa, the Red Center of Australia and the Sonoran Desert of the southwest United States. The Desert Dome contains 84,000 square feet on two levels (42,000 square feet on each level). Located beneath the Desert Dome exhibit is the Kingdoms of the Night, the world's largest nocturnal exhibit.
"The three deserts of the Desert Dome are divided by central mountain, a 55-foot-tall mountain in the middle of the Desert Dome. Surrounding Central Mountain are a variety of unique desert plants including succulents, palms, mesquite trees, grasses, herbs, shrubs and the endangered Welwitshcia, found only in the Namibian deserts. The Namib Desert of southern Africa is the world's oldest and most biologically diverse desert."
"The Desert Dome in the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo is home to the largest indoor desert in the world, housed under the largest glazed geodesic dome in the world. It's a marvel of engineering and design that's impressive even from the outside, the Only In Your State says.
"The Desert Dome rises 13 stories above the ground and covers a full acre of land without utilizing any interior support columns. Inside, there are exhibits displaying three different desert regions from around the world: the Namib Desert of southwestern Africa, the Red Center in central Australia, and the Sonoran Desert of the southwest United States and northwest Mexico.
"There is abundant plant and animal life from all around the world housed inside this big dome. It'll be easy to forget that you're indoors – in Nebraska – as you wander through the exhibits looking at exotic snakes, giant cacti, and huge sand dunes and cliffs spanning 84,000 square feet across two levels."
"Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is a zoo in Omaha, Nebraska. It is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Its mission is conservation, research, recreation, and education. In August 2014, TripAdvisor rated it the "world's best zoo", ahead of the San Diego Zoo and Loro Parque, based on an algorithmic assimilation of millions of reviews for 275 major zoos worldwide," the
Wikipedia says.
"The zoo is known for its leadership in animal conservation and research. Evolving from the public Riverview Park Zoo established in 1894, today the zoo includes several notable exhibits. "Kingdoms of the Night" is the world's largest nocturnal exhibit and indoor swamp, the "Lied Jungle" is one of the world's largest indoor rainforests, and the "Desert Dome" is one of the world's largest indoor deserts, as well as the largest glazed geodesic dome.
"The zoo has two rides that circumnavigate the property (tram and train): a carousel and the Skyfari, an aerial tram which opened in 2009 and takes visitors from the Butterfly and Insect Pavilion to the new lion viewing exhibit."
"The "Desert Dome" is the brainchild of Zoo Director, Lee Simmons, no stranger to mammoth projects. Since he was named director of the Henry Doorly Zoo in 1970, Mr. Simmons has created North America's largest "big cat" complex and the world's largest indoor rain forest," the Voice of America says.
"Of the 175 species of plants now growing in that soil, many stand in living testimony to the loss of desert habitat. Terry Gouveia, the zoo's curator of horticulture, says most of the cactus plantings, from the giant saguaro to the tiny Mammillaria, were rescued from the encroaching sprawl of urban and industrial areas in the southwestern United States.
"In all, 75 species of animals are now at home up on the rocks or in the crannies of the indoor desert - roadrunners and rock hyrax, hummingbirds and Harris hawks, pumas and peccaries, lizards and leopards."
"Travel the world at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. Visit the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium featuring the largest aquarium inside of a zoo. Walk on the bottom of the ocean and come nose to nose with sea turtles as sharks circle above.
"Discover rare and endangered animals as you journey through Expedition Madagascar. See Hubbard Orangutan Forest and Gorilla Valley where gorillas roam and visitors are on display. Discover the mysteries of the night in Kingdoms of the Night, the world's largest nocturnal exhibit. Immerse yourself in wildlife in America's largest indoor rainforest, the Lied Jungle and the world's largest indoor desert, the Desert Dome," the Visit Nebraska says..
"Plus enjoy tigers, lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffe and so much more. Rides available include a live steam train, tram, carousel and aerial tram. Please visit OmahaZoo.com for hours and admission details."
"Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is consistently ranked as one of the world’s best zoos. What began as modest Riverview Park in 1894 has grown into one of the state’s top tourist attractions. With enormous interactive exhibits, an IMAX theater, and unique opportunities to feed a budgie, ride a camel and pet a stingray, the zoo is truly a one-of-a-kind experience," the Nebraska Travel Guide says.
"Exhibits include the Lied Jungle, the world’s largest indoor rainforest, and the Desert Dome, the world’s largest indoor desert. The Kingdoms of the Night winds visitors through a swamp and two caves, showcasing nocturnal animals. The Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium includes a 70-foot tunnel where sharks and sea turtles swim right overhead. The Alaskan Adventures splash pad is a great place to cool down in the summer, or catch a ride on the Skyfari for a bird’s-eye view from above.
"Strollers and wheelchairs are available for rent. Train and tram tickets can also be purchased for transportation throughout the zoo. A gift shop is available for souvenirs."
"This was quite a lovely zoo. It's not the largest by far but the indoor desert and the night shade section featuring creatures of the night, was a welcome difference from other zoos that we have been to.
"This was such a great zoo! We are 2 adults and were there for 4 hours. If you have children, you definitely could be there for the day. There is so much to do and see - besides the animals, there's a movie theater, a water splash park, a train and tram."
"I haven't been to a lot of zoos, but this is the best one I can remember. The animals and displays of course are great. Highlights include feeding giraffes, touching stingrays, interacting with primates, the aquarium and watching swimming seals through glass. Ride options are also fun."
"When they tell you to plan a full day to see the zoo, they are not kidding! There are so many things for all ages. I saw many adults in the 50+ range unaccompanied by children enjoying the sites."
"The zoo is huge and great to explore. The Desert dome was incredible. There is also an aquarium, large exhibits, and additional activities. Lots of hills and walking so be prepared for a full day."
