World's Largest Apple Basket: world record in Frazeysburg, Ohio

Frazeysburg, Ohio, United States--The Longaberger Village is still abandoned and the parking lots are blocked off, but the giant apple basket has been repainted and is still visible; the huge basket, 20 feet tall, filled to overflowing with large, fake apples, was repainted and restored in 2022; it sets the world record for being the World's Largest Apple Basket, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

From the official brochure: "Boasting a bumper crop of huge four-foot apples, this is a great spot for a group or family photo."

"Located in the town of Frazeysburg, 17 miles east of Longaberger’s Newark corporate offices, the Longaberger Homestead includes exhibits, basket-making instruction, restaurants, gift shops, a golf course, and a manufacturing tour. It also features––what else––the World’s Largest Apple Basket, which is 20 feet tall," the Weird US says.

"We’re not sure when they added the apples, but it was shortly after they decided to turn the main street of the homestead into this weird town-like place where all the buildings featured different ways you could display Longaberger baskets in your home. Our guess is the giant apples were to show how you could use them to display any giant baskets you might have lying around."

"The Crawford Barn, a historic structure originally built in the late 1800's, is The Homestead's new home for the Make A Basket™ Shop. Visitors can choose from two new baskets to weave with the help of a Longaberger Basketmaker. The Barn also houses the company's retired Fan Favorites Baskets, which can be purchased on site," an official Press Release said.

"Food options include the Homestead Restaurant, featuring home-cooked lunches and dinners; the Barn BBQ, with a range of lunch and dinner options; a hand-dipped ice cream shop in the Crawford Barn; and the bakery in the Factory Store & More.

"Each year, hundreds of thousands of people visit The Homestead. The Homestead features a variety of family-friendly events throughout the season, including Spring Fling, Summer Bash, American Celebration and Heritage Days Fall Festival, among others.

"The property is located in East Central Ohio Business park and consists of more than 1.9 million-square-feet of distribution, manufacturing, retail and office space on 563 acres," the Zanesville Times Recorder says.

"Longaberger opened the Homestead in 1999 when the company employed about 8,000 people, as the Times Recorder previously reported. In 2014, the property at 5563 Raiders Road sold for $15.8 million to CFA NNN Raiders.

"The number of Longaberger employees at that time was approximately 300. The sale allowed the company to pay off the last of its bank debt and become debt free for the first time in the company's history."

"A huge basket, 20 feet tall, filled to overflowing with large, fake apples. Repainted and restored in 2022," the Roadside America reports.

"The Longaberger Village is still abandoned and the parking lots are blocked off, but the basket has been repainted and is still visible. There is no way to park next to it, though it is possible to park along the side access road and get out for quick photos. Since the basket has been refurbished, maybe there are plans to eventually reopen the closed shops, but nobody that I asked knew for sure.

"This was a beautiful stop. Loved the basket! The business really looks like it's closed down -- more like a ghost town. I'd read that it was closed until April, but it just looked closed down and out of business. Either way, you still can go and see the basket."

Reviews from TripAdvisor

"We always stopped at the homestead every time we came to the basket party each summer. It was a wonderful place to shop."

"Great weekend, they had quite a few "prototype" baskets released for sale. Many more products for sale than the last few years. Enjoyable weekend."

"You could clearly see this was once a grand showcase of a company's crown jewels. The buildings are huge, ornate stair cases and dozens of show rooms with vast amounts if product for sale of items crafted in the hey days of the early 2000's. All that's missing are people."

"Basket sit at the end of the road at homestead across from where the Longaberger old home is on display.Unfortunately the family no longer signs baskets since it has been sold."

"It is a nice facility and has a beautiful big basket of apples outside the factory building. We visited on a Wednesday and it was very slow. There were maybe 10 people in the building mostly employees. They have a lot of merchandise as well as baskets, but I was disappointed that all of the baskets were made years ago - most at least 3-5 years. The company has had a rough time and the Longaberger daughter is no longer in charge and a new company has bought the brand."
