World's Smallest Museum: world record in Superior, Arizona

Superior, Arizona, United States--Taking up a whopping 134 square feet, this tiny museum was built over 20 years ago by Dan Wight and Jake Reaney, owners of the adjacent Buckboard City Cafe; originally intended to lure tourists into the restaurant, it sets the world record for being the World's Smallest Museum, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

""A sign above the front door reads “Artifacts of Ordinary Life.” Ordinary, indeed. I mean who hasn’t seen their share of rusted out buckets and wheelbarrows. Then there’s a stack of ordinary tires that resembles a totem pole," the Arizona Wonders reports

"But then, there’s the not so ordinary: an Apache Tear good luck stone purported to be the largest in the world. Outside the museum building is a mammoth tire from some sort of heavy equipment at the nearby Resolution Mine. It’s so big, surely it’s worthy of some title such as largest tire in Arizona."

"This place, which is nothing more than a tiny Tuff Shed storage building, was opened in the mid-1990s by Dan Wight and Jake Reaney. They built it as a way to lure diners into their next-door Buckboard City Cafe -- and as a way to put some of their accumulated personal stuff to productive use," the Roadside America reports.

"The exhibits, set behind glass panels, include a 1984 Compaq home computer, a Beatles concert poster, a 1960 letter from president-elect John F. Kennedy (to Jake Reaney), and the World's Largest Apache Tear (which is a kind of rock).

"The World's Smallest Museum measures only 134 square feet."

"The museum is no bigger than your average storage shed, yet I wonder if the curator might be guilty of false advertising. After all, it’s contents spill out onto the adjacent grounds. I can’t help wondering if there’s another tiny museum in the world that hasn’t expanded so far beyond its walls. Who checks claims like that anyway?

"Taking up a whopping 134 square feet, this tiny shed was built over 20 years ago by Dan Wight and Jake Reaney, owners of the adjacent Buckboard City Cafe. Originally intended to lure tourists into the restaurant, the World's Smallest Museum quickly became a noteworthy attraction of its own," the Only In Your State reports.

"An incredible amount of innovation went into constructing the building. You'll likely have to do a double-take to notice it, but closer inspection reveals a roof made entirely of recycled cans!

"The quirky exterior gives way to an even more eclectic collection of items. History buffs and science geeks alike will find great delight in artifacts ranging from presidential campaign paraphernalia to antiquated computers."

"World's Smallest Museum, one of Arizona's finest roadside attractions in Superior on historic US 60, showcases "artifacts of ordinary life," and by doing so, honors the world's extra-ordinary workforce! From a large iron kettle filled with ancient bits and pieces of pottery to the computer on display, a true memorium is subtly woven in one's mind that honors common people," the RoadTrippers.com reports.

"While World's Smallest Museum reflects ordinary life with its displays of common yet unique artifacts, outside is our Memory Lane / Waterfall Avenue! Using artifacts of ordinary working equipment and recycling them into fountains and waterfalls, monuments to the unsung heroes, all hard working people of the world becomes Memory Lane's / Waterfall Avenue's theme!

"A visit to World's Smallest Museum is for most, a step back in time and a stroll down Memory Lane / Waterfall Avenue! Enjoy yourself and come back soon to one of Arizona's finest roadside attractions!"

"This fun museum in Superior, Phoenix looks a country barn (although you guessed it right, it’s definitely smaller than that!) The roof is made out of cans so you can guess the person behind this destination has a creative mind. That’s totally cool and eco-friendly! Outside the museum, you’ll see fun recyclables like wheelbarrows and tires on display. There is also a short aisle with glass panels that protect each precious collection housed inside the small museum," the When In Your State reports.

"This quirky little museum carries the tagline “Artifacts of Ordinary Life.” You will see some The Beatles memorabilia representing pop culture, ancient computers (with 10mb hard drive), and food from the early 90s that were kept. You can even find a letter of the late President John F. Kennedy to one of the founders of the museum.

"If you are a fan of outdated technology, you should anticipate items such as quill pens or clunky old cameras. The antiquated mimeograph will also make you really curious about how it works. The items inside the World’s Smallest Museum stays the same for a long time, but there are still some minor additions over the years. You best believe that this destination is a must-see when driving through Arizona."

"One of the big attractions on display in the museum is the World's Largest Apache Tear Good Luck Stone! This semi-precious stone is a "merikanite obsidian nodule," mother nature's glass in rounded shapes from pea size to softball size. Found only near Superior, it is a smokey brown translucent gem quality stone. It is the only obsidian nodule that can truly called an Apache Tear!"

"Even though it never gets any larger, the World’s Smallest Museum in Superior remains a work in progress. Owner Dan Wight never enlarges the museum itself, but he’s always working on improving the grounds that surround it," the Arizona Oddities reports.

"Like adding new fountains. The most recent one is made of old mining equipment; before that Wight constructed one out of old tires."

"Superior (Western Apache: Yooʼ Łigai) is a town in Pinal County, Arizona. According to the 2020 census, the population of the town is 2,407. Superior was founded as a mining town for the Silver King and the later Magma mines; silver was mined at first, and then transitioned to copper. Currently, exploitation of the huge Resolution Copper deposit is being explored.

"The Superior townsite was laid out in 1902, and named after the Lake Superior and Arizona Copper Company (LS&A). The Superior post office opened on December 29, 1902.

"Superior is located approximately 70 miles (110 km) east of Phoenix and the same distance north of Tucson. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.9 sq mi (5.0 km2), all land." (

"With an infamous roof crafted from 1800 beer cans, this museum with a footprint of a mere 134 square feet exceeds capacity beyond two people at a time," the Superior Arizona reports.

"Housing the world’s largest Apache Tear, the museum’s collection of oddities ranges from presidential campaign materials, random collectables, pop-culture memorabilia, and outdated technology. Definitely worth the selfie as you journey through Superior!"

Testimonials from TripAdvisor

"Very small, but it's free and there is a lot to see in there. For the price (free) and the size this is well worth looking at. I'm not a museum fan usually because there is too much to see and my husband wants to see it all. This is just the right amount for me."

"Won't take long and great bragging rights. You can't miss it if going the speed limit. Staff are friendly and where else can you visit a museum, take in all the sights, and do so in a few minutes."

"This is a fun stop, if it is open. We checked it out after eating at the diner. Several neat things displayed, even in a decent order."

"This little Museum is really cool. Just some really interesting things to see. I would recommend stopping. It’s small, so doesn’t take much time."

"After many visits to Superior, and the restaurant next door, we decided to check out this museum. What a surprise. The place is packed with a quirky variety of historical items - old campaign buttons, typewriters, pictures, tools and more. More relics are scattered outside. Interesting and well worth your time."
