Middleton, Wisconsin, United States--With more than 5,624 jars of prepared mustard on display, from all 50 states and more than 70 countries (and counting), the collection of Mustard History from the National Mustard Museum in Middleton, Wisconsin, United States, sets the world record for being the World's Largest Collection Of Mustards, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.
The National Mustard Museum (formerly the Mount Horeb Mustard Museum) was conceived and founded by Barry Levenson, former Assistant Attorney General of Wisconsin.
It centers on a mustard collection he began in 1986 while despondent over the failure of his favorite baseball team, the Boston Red Sox, to win the 1986 World Series. The initial dozen jars have grown to a collection of more than 5,300 mustard jars from more than 60 countries, along with hundreds of items of mustard memorabilia and exhibits depicting the use of mustard through history.
The museum's gift shop occupies about half of its floor space and offers free tasting of mustard samples from a refrigerated case containing scores of varieties; the museum also operates a mail-order mustard business.
The Mustard Museum has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, the popular game shows Jeopardy! and To Tell the Truth, as well as countless features on other national television and radio shows, and in major newspapers everywhere.
Mustard is a condiment made from the seeds of a mustard plant (white/yellow mustard, Sinapis alba; brown mustard, Brassica juncea; or black mustard, Brassica nigra).
The whole, ground, cracked, or bruised mustard seeds are mixed with water, vinegar, lemon juice, wine, or other liquids, salt, and often other flavouring and spices, to create a paste or sauce ranging in colour from bright yellow to dark brown. The seed itself has a strong, pungent, and somewhat bitter taste. The taste of mustard condiments ranges from sweet to spicy.
Mustard is commonly paired with meats, vegetables and cheeses, especially as a condiment for sandwiches, hamburgers, corn dogs, and hot dogs. It is also used as an ingredient in many dressings, glazes, sauces, soups, and marinades. As a cream or as individual seeds, mustard is used as a condiment in the cuisine of India and Bangladesh, the Mediterranean, northern and southeastern Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa, making it one of the most popular and widely used spices and condiments in the world.
"The national mustard museum is worth a quick stop, especially if you are a condiment fan. There are a bunch of different mustard jars from around the world on display in the museum downstairs. The gift shop is at street level. You can sample a bunch of different mustards, and buy your favorites. There is a small parking lot, and free street parking.
"The museum is a great size and is free to visit. It is interesting and unique. Has a tasting bar in the gift shop which allowed us to try many mustards."
"What a neat little museum and shop. The museum had really an amazing collection of all things mustard. The store itself was also great. The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable."
"I have never seen so many different kinds of mustard. They have a tasting area that is clean and safe."
"I'm a mustard fanatic and have ordered from their online shop for years. When I realized we were going to be near here for a cross country meet I couldn't miss going to the museum. It's quirky, eccentric, and fun! Everything you ever wanted to know about mustard and more--and the displays are great. Figure you'll spend about 45 minutes here and make sure you try some samples and then buy some great mustards!"
