Afton, Wyoming, United States--Conceived by the Afton Chamber of Commerce, the Elkhorn Arch in Afton, Wyoming, United States, was completed in July 1958; the arch spans all four lanes of U.S. Route 89 as the highway passes through downtown Afton and is 18-feet tall and 75-feet wide, setting the world record for being the World's Largest Elkhorn Arch, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"The arch spans all four lanes of U.S. Route 89 as the highway passes through downtown Afton. The arch is 18-feet tall and 75-feet wide. Smaller elk antler arches flank each side of the arch’s base. Although Jackson Hole’s elk antler arches are more widely known, the antler arch in Afton is believed to be the largest in the world," the Atlas Obscura says.

"First conceived by the Afton Chamber of Commerce in 1956, the Elkhorn Arch was completed in July 1958. It’s composed of 3,011 intertwined elk antlers and weighs over 15 tons. The arch was constructed at an estimated cost of $2,500. Today, the antlers, popular as an aphrodisiac in Asian medicine, are valued at an estimated $300,000.

"No elk were harmed in the arch’s construction. Elk shed their antlers each spring, and the naturally discarded antlers were collected with a permit from the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission. Most of the antlers were gathered from the National Elk Refuge near Jackson, Wyoming. Annual antler collections continue for the arch’s maintenance and upkeep. It also receives a yearly coating of a special weatherproof finish."

"In 1955, a group of boy scouts gathered antlers as a scout project. And in 1956, Afton's Chamber of Commerce decided to put the horns to use. Making the arch was no easy task. The town placed a steel frame that stretched above four lanes of road and weaved the horns, screwing them together. The Arch was completed in 1958, standing 18 feet tall and 75 feet wide. It is estimated to weigh over 15 tons. The project cost approximately $2,500 to make. But if you were to make an arch as massive as Afton's today, the price for the antlers alone would be as high as $300,000," the Star Valley Wyoming says.

"As an on-going tradition, boy scouts obtain a special use permit to gather elk antlers at the National Elk Refuge. This prevents illegal poaching and damage to farming equipment. The boy scouts auction off these prized antlers and make as much as $47,000 a year. According to the Jackson Hole Traveler, the average price per pound the elk antlers sell for is $17. These antlers can weigh up to 10 pounds apiece. That's about $170 dollars per antler!

"Surrounding the Elkhorn Arch is the rustic town of Afton, central to beautiful hiking trails, a golf course, mountain lakes perfect for fishing, and the famous Intermittent Spring that brings fresh water from a geyser."

"This beautiful structure consists of approximately 3,000 elk (wapiti) antlers and is the largest elkhorn arch in the world. It is one of the most outstanding attractions for tourists in Afton and thousands stop to photograph it each year. The structure completely spans Afton's Main Street at a height of approximately 18 feet," the lynconcountywy.com says.

"Members of the Chamber of Commerce and others conceived the idea of putting elk horns over the Main street in the early summer of 1956. An application was made to the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission to obtain the necessary antlers for the project. Most of the antlers came from the Wyoming Elk Preserve near Jackson, Wyoming. The arch was finished in July 1958 at a cost of approximately $2,500 which was raised by the Chamber of Commerce members through contributions, donations of labor and part of their regular fees. To duplicate this arch today would cost over $300,000 for the antlers alone.

"The elkhorn arch has been repaired and added to since its completion. It requires a yearly coating of a special plastic finish to keep it looking new and attractive."

"Before you reach the town and you way drive on a part of HW 89 that is exact the stateline of ID and WY with beautiful green mountain along. HY 89 will go through the whole town and you will see the World's Largest Elkhorn Arch across the highway on the center of the town.

"If you are there at the weekend, you should also stop at Alpine WY, 30 miles north of Afton.
