World's largest Swedish coffee pot: world record set in Kingsburg, California

Kingsburg, California, United States--A water tower in Kingsburg, California, was modified to resemble a giant Swedish coffee pot; the 60,000 gallon vessel, if it could tilt, would fill 1.28 million coffee cups and it is 122 feet tall, lit at night, setting the world record for being the World's Largest Swedish Coffee Pot, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"In the 1980s, the town decided to take an extra step to honor its founders by remodeling the old water tower. And what could be more Swedish than a giant Swedish coffee pot?"the atlasobscura.com reports.

"Swedes are famous for their love of coffee, as Sweden is one of the world’s biggest coffee consuming countries. It’s a shame this enormous coffee pot doesn’t hold actual java. If the 122-foot-tall coffee pot could tilt, it could pour 1.28 million cups of coffee."

"Kingsburg is a city in Fresno County, California. Kingsburg is located 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Selma at an elevation of 302 feet (92 m), on the banks of the Kings River. (wikipedia)

"The city is 21 miles (34 km) from Fresno, and about 130 miles (210 km) from the California Central Coast and Sierra Nevada mountain range. The population was 11,382 at the 2010 census."

"One of the notable landmarks in the community is the Kingsburg water tower, which is shaped like an antique Swedish coffee pot. The water tower was originally built in 1911 and was modified in 1985, inspired by a resident's visit to the similarly decorated water tower in Stanton, Iowa; the Kingsburg coffee pot water tower is 122 ft (37 m) tall, lit at night, and visible from SR 99.

"The Kingsburg pot is slightly larger than the Stanton one, at 60,000 and 50,000 US gal (230,000 and 190,000 l), respectively; the Stanton pot was taken down from its tower in 2015 and preserved, as it had been superseded by a larger water tower in the late 1990s."

"The World's Largest Swedish Coffeepot - a beautiful example of Water tower World's Largest manifestations. The town itself was geared towards the whole "Lil' bit o' Sweden", with the requisite Dala horses and almost-polka music over the very tidy downtown," the worldslargestthings.com reports.

"The Coffeepot itself hovered over one of the many public parks in the area, right next to the historical downtown, behind the firestation. Seemed to be a popular high school lunch hangout, too."

From the plaque at the base:

"Chamber of Commerce Project 1985 Kingsburg is a Unique Community. To reflect the heritage, and friendliness of it’s citizens, this water tower is being displayed as a coffee pot.

"The coffee pot tower is another fun way of displaying that heritage to the world. The coffee pot can be seen when driving by on the freeway, so just keep an eye out for it on the east side of the 99 as there's really nothing to see other than the coffee pot perched up high."

"The Swedish Coffee Pot Water Tower is a landmark that can be seen from the Freeway.

"An interesting landmark denoting the Swedish Heritage and Culture of this quaint town."

"Lots of open space to walk around and look at the teapot. Just next to a cute downtown area."

"A good place to take a picture is from Marion Street. Enjoy the scenery up and down Draper Street."

"Often mistaken for a teapot, those who know Swedish culture realize our large coffee pot is a tribute the Swedish roots of the community. Set in a park just off of Draper Street, Kingsburg's main drag, there is a playground for young children in addition to picnic tables and a large shaded area just to relax in."
