World's first endocrinology institute: National Institute of Endocrinology C. I. Parhon

Parhon was the founder of the Romanian school of endocrinology. In 1909, he co-authored with Moise Goldstein the world's first medical treatise on endocrinology.

Dr. Constantin Ion Parhon, MD, 15 October 1874 – 9 August 1969) was a Romanian neuropsychiatrist, endocrinologist and politician. He was the first head of state of Communist Romania from 1947 to 1952. Parhon was President of the Physicians and Naturalists Society in Iași, hospital director, professor, and director of medical institutes.

Parhon was a member of the Romanian Academy and other scientific societies. He was awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labor and received the State Prize. He liked to be referred to as a "citizen-scientist".

He resigned from political office in June 1952, dedicating the rest of his life to scientific research.

Parhon taught Neurology and Psychiatry at the School of Medicine of the University of Iași (1912–1933), and, from 1933, Endocrinology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bucharest.

Parhon was the founder of the Romanian school of endocrinology.

In 1909, he co-authored with Moise Goldstein the world's first medical treatise on endocrinology , Secrețiile Interne ("Internal Secretions"). Later on, he published a Handbook of Endocrinology, co-written with M. Goldstein and Ștefan-Marius Milcu (3 volumes, 1945–1949).

Parhon published over 400 titles, and was known for his encyclopedic knowledge. Besides the aforementioned works, some of his other well-known works are Old Age and Its Treatment (1948), The Age Biology (1955), and Selected Works (5 volumes, 1954–1962).

About his life and accomplishments, Dr. Constantin Ion Parhon states: "I believe that a balanced soul formation develops from the harmony of reading and life, from the theoretical education and experience. My life experience has been rich from the beginning. We went through several cities, through multiple environments, through several schools. And I had the strength and perseverance that French naturalist Cuvier talks about "by studying and paying attention to cast off the disgust that a worm inspires you to be able to analyze life and beings, even the least sympathetic."

The Institute serves patients from all over the country, including from rural areas, 35% of them being only in Bucharest.

In the specialty profile of endocrinology, the institute presents unique sections. Thus, the "golden" section is Endocrine Surgery, which is distinguished by a high rate of surgeons (93.65%), compared to the national average (33.4%).

The Nuclear Therapy Department also provides radio-iodine therapy for thyroid cancers, being one of the first of its kind in the world and one of the most important departments of the institute.
