"Utilizing the identical process that is used to build standard size hockey sticks right down to the "pro 1000" logo and "slap sock," Christian Brothers built the 107 foot stick of white and yellow aspen with a finishing weight of 7,000 pounds. The shaft was 15 inches thick by 22 inches wide by 17 feet long," the City of Eveleth says.

"To add to the attraction a hockey puck that is 5 feet by 20 inches and weighs 700 pounds was added in addition to a 30 foot high by 80 foot wide mural of a goalie poised to stop the puck which adorns the wall of the local storefront across the street.

"In September of 2001, the City of Eveleth had determined the replacement of the Stick to the be the most cost effective solution. In an effort to offset the costs of replacing the Stick a partnership between the City of Eveleth and the Chamber of Commerce was created to offer "authentic" pieces of the Stick in return for a $5.00 donation. These pieces of the original Stick are now a rare find in Eveleth."

"Eveleth is about three hours north of Minneapolis-St. Paul on US Highway 53. This is actually the second version of the world's largest hockey stick. The first one was a reproduction of a Christian Brothers Pro stick built in 1995. It was located at the corner of Grant Avenue and Monroe Street.

"The newest big stick was installed on June 18, 2002, it is 110 feet long and weighs over 10,000 pounds. It was designed and built by Sentinel Structures of Peshtigo, Wisconsin, which is one of the nation's leading firms in the development of structural glued laminated timber."

"Although Canada and the United States claim to have the world’s biggest hockey sticks, they fall into different categories. For example, the Eveleth, Minnesota, stick is the world’s largest free-standing hockey stick monument, while the Canadian structure located in Duncan on Vancouver Island is the world’s biggest stick," the Ted Talks Hockey says.

"Eveleth constructed a new and improved monument in 2002 due to a crack that had developed in the original monument. This rendition sits on a vacant lot known as “Hockey Plaza.” The latest and enhanced giant hockey monument is 110 feet long, three feet longer than the original, and weighs 10,000 pounds, 3,000 pounds heavier than its predecessor, complete with a 700-pound built-to-scale puck measuring 5 feet by 20 inches.

"The Large blade is made of treated lumber laminate using the same adhesive processes used in exterior plywood construction. The shaft measures 15 inches thick by 22 inches wide by 90 feet long and required 30 laminations to complete. The blade is 4 inches thick by 66 inches wide by 17 feet long. On the opposite side of the street, a 30 ft high by 80 ft wide mural of a goalie is pictured, poised to make a save."

Part of breaking up our drive times and making the journey more tolerable is by finding obscure and quirky things to stop and see," the
Roaming Together says.

"It’s kind of like doing the state highpoints – you see parts of the country that you never would otherwise, and catch little bits of Americana.

"The US Hockey Hall of Fame Museum is here in Eveleth Minnesota, so it makes sense that the largest hockey stick would be here too. At 110 feet tall and weighing over 5 tons, it’s something to see – once."

"On July 3, 2001 the original Big Stick was removed from it's supports due to material degradation and structural integrity concerns. In September of 2001, City of Eveleth determined that a replacement stick would be the most effective solution. The following summer on June 18, 2002 their was a buzz of excitement as news traveled that the new Big Stick was en route from Wisconsin and would arrive a day earlier than anticipated, the Vintage Minnesota Hockey says.

"The new stick - still adorned with the original Christian USA markings - was actually manufactured by Sentinel Structures, Inc., of Peshtigo Wisconsin and was designed using treated lumber laminate with adhesives similar to exterior plywood construction applications.

"The new stick weighed 10,000 pounds (5 tons), measured at 110 ft. long, and was again given a State Patrol escort to downtown Eveleth, just as the original back in 1995. In an effort to offset the costs of replacing the original "Big Stick" a partnership between the City and the Chamber of Commerce was created to offer authentic pieces of the original stick for a $5.00 donation. These pieces of the original stick are now a rare find, and highly collectable."
