Moorhead, Minnesota, United States--An icon of the Fargo-Moorhead area, the Moorhead Dairy Queen is one of the oldest original stores in the entire franchise; beyond being adored by the community, the famous Dilly Bar was created at this very location; with the 20-foot-tall Dilly Bar statue out front, it sets the world record for the World's Largest Dilly Bar, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"There's no better place to have one than at the corner of 8th and Main. Seventy-four years ago, the Dairy Queen at that location opened its doors. Troy Deleon is only the second owner in the restaurant's history. Because it's been around for so long, it's no ordinary DQ," the CBS News says.

"That includes the famed Dilly Bars. In 1955, original owner Bob Litherland and a couple of guys from Minneapolis started experimenting with frozen treats. At one point, they froze a circle of ice cream onto a tongue depressor.

"They actually use cardboard to get that perfect circle and swirl. Then they head to a negative-20-degree freezer dedicated solely to Dilly Bars. That's where they sit for six hours."

"An icon of the Fargo-Moorhead area, the Moorhead Dairy Queen is one of the oldest original stores in the entire franchise. A visit here is like stepping back into the 1950s. You get to walk up to the window to place your order and then sit outside with your ice cream treats (there’s no indoor seating)," the Visit Fargo-Moorhead says.

"The day it opens in early spring, lines form around the block – it’s safe to say locals love this slightly retro summer hangout. Beyond being adored by the community, the famous Dilly Bar was created at this very location, so of course there’s a giant statue of a Dilly Bar outside to commemorate it.

"It’s still operating under the 70-year-old original franchise contract. That means they have more flexibility in how they operate (for instance, they still pay the original 1949 royalties rate on DQ treats from the corporate warehouse). This old school contract also allows owners Troy and Diane DeLeon the freedom to source ingredients from outside providers and to dish out “rogue” menu items you won’t find at other Dairy Queens."

"Did you know the world largest Dilly Bar is in Moorhead, MN? The Moorhead DQ is a throwback to the old time ice cream shop. If you turned on some Bryan Adam’s Summer of ’69 you’d have a hard time convincing me it’s 2022," the KFGO says.

"It’s like a trip to a museum with food! It makes the ice cream sweeter, the chocolate a little richer. Honestly without comparing I’d say even the prices are a little easier on the pocket book than most of the other modern ice cream shops.

"The placement right between Main Ave and the rail road tracks gives an added sensory bonus of sights, sounds…along with the legendary taste of the Moorhead DQ. You should read up on the history of this Moorhead landmark. Opening in 1948!"

"Now operated by Troy and Diane DeLeon who are carrying on the tradition of the original owners, this family-friendly DQ is known for its “rogue” menu items that are not found at other Dairy Queens."

"The Moorhead Dairy Queen was opened in 1949 by Bob and Phyllis Litherland as one of the original stores in the Dairy Queen system. Bob and Phyllis combined their passion for ice cream and handmade treats with their love for the city of Moorhead, MN and her people," the Moorhead Dairy Queen says.

"Over the years, the Litherlands created a myriad of dishes made from fresh ingredients, which their loyal patrons were more than happy to test out.

"They perfected some of these recipes and made them a permanent part of their menu; and, with a nod to adventure and good humor, others were laid to rest."

"Have you ever had a dilly bar? It’s an iconic Dairy Queen novelty treat that consists of a disc of soft serve coated in hardened chocolate (or cherry or butterscotch candy) served on a stick. On a hot summer day I could probably eat ten of them. Or, I don’t know, maybe one GIANT one like the world’s largest Dilly Bar in Moorhead, Minnesota," the Silly America says.

"The Dilly Bar was invented in 1955 at the Moorhead Dairy Queen in Minnesota. According to local legend, co-owner Robert Litherland dipped a round of soft serve in chocolate, held it high, and declared, “Now, isn’t that a dilly?” And thus, the classic Dilly Bar was born.

"Though the novelty ice cream bar is now served in Dairy Queen franchises nationwide, that can’t be said of everything served at the Fargo-Moorhead location. This particular franchise has a 70-year old contract (signed in 1949) that allows them to serve off-menu, discontinued, and rogue items in addition to DQ approved cuisine."

"The world’s largest Dilly Bar — standing 12 whoppin’ feet tall — holds court in Moorhead, a roadside beacon for America’s most unconventional Dairy Queen. Bob and Phyllis Litherland opened the beloved franchise in 1949; five years later, they invented one of the company’s most iconic treats: a frozen disc of soft-serve ice cream dipped in a waxy chocolate, cherry, or butterscotch coating," the Minnevangelist says.

"That conviction manifested itself in everything from his scratch-made and locally sourced ingredients — raspberries plucked from Lake Country farms, chocolate chip cookies from Hornbacher’s, a top-secret barbecue sauce — to special items you won’t find on any other DQ menu, including Polish sausage, chocolate malt on a stick (Mr. Maltie), and chocolate-dipped frozen bananas (a.k.a. Monkey Tails), a la the Bluths’ boardwalk stand on Arrested Development.

"Current owners Troy and Diane DeLeon kept Bob’s renegade spirit alive when they took over the Moorhead location in the summer of ’95. They maintained his one-of-a-kind menu, down to the hand-dipped Dilly and Buster Bars and unusual sundae flavors like cherry, blueberry, pineapple, and raspberry. And while you‘ll no longer find Bob’s wacky flaming sundae on the Moorhead menu, the ice cream cakes are still made in-house and fully customizable—corporate suits be damned."

"International Dairy Queen, Inc. (DQ) is an American multinational fast food chain founded in 1940. It is currently headquartered in Bloomington, Minnesota," Wikipedia says.

"The first Dairy Queen was owned and operated by Sherb Noble and first opened on June 22, 1940, in Joliet, Illinois. It serves a variety of hot and fried food, as well as original frozen dairy products that vary from location to location.

"The company's products expanded to include malts and milkshakes in 1950, banana splits in 1951, Dilly Bars in 1955 (introduced to the franchise by Robert Litherland, the co-owner of a store in Moorhead, Minnesota), a range of hamburgers and other cooked foods under the Brazier banner in 1958, Mr. Misty slush treats in 1961 (later renamed Misty Slush, then again to Arctic Rush; as of 2017, DQ again calls them Misty Slush, as seen on dairyqueen.com), and Jets, Curly Tops, Freezes in 1964."
