Rothsay, Minnesota, United States--A giant Booming Prairie Chicken Sculpture, built by artist Art Fosse, is located in Rothsay on the west central plains of Minnesota; at 13 feet high, 18 feet long, and weighing 9,000 pounds, it sets the world record for being the World's Largest Booming Prairie Chicken Sculpture, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"On the information placards leading up to the monument, there’s a well-illustrated history of the area as well as a description of the wildlife of the area. This was a bonus stop, as I didn’t have Rothsay marked on the map," the World's largest Things says.

"Prairie chickens moved ahead of the settlers to inhabit the prairies of Minnesota. A large concentration of the protected bird can still be seen on prairie meadows of the Rothsay area. In the early spring the male prairie chicken performs his mating ritual called booming. He spreads his wings and tail feathers, inflates the orange wind sacs and struts while making the booming sound.

"On June 10, 1975, Rothsay was designated “Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota”. This statue of a booming prairie chicken was designed and built by Art Fosse with assistance and funds from the community. The statue stands 13 x 18 feet and weighs 9,000 pounds. It was placed on this site and unveiled, June 15, 1976. The objective of this project is to alert area visitors and remind local residents of the beauty to be found on the native prairie grasslands."

"The statue in Rothsay was unveiled on June 15, 1976, a year after Rothsay was declared (self-proclaimed?) the “Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota.” Designed and built by Art Fosse with help and funding from the local community, it shows a greater prairie chicken in the act of booming, its air sacs inflated and head thrust forward in a display of avian potency," the Atlas Obscura says.

"It also happens to be the largest prairie chicken statue in the world. Whether it actually has any challengers to that particular title is unknown, but perhaps doubtful. Still, at 13 feet high, 18 feet long, and weighing 9,000 pounds, this is one chicken you wouldn’t want to mess with.

"The World’s Largest Prairie Chicken is located in Rothsay on the west central plains of Minnesota. You’ll find it on I-94 between Fergus Falls and Moorhead, about 200 miles northwest of Minneapolis. There’s a small park with a view of the surrounding plains near the chicken, where people can picnic and read a few signs with information about the area."

"I’m always up for visiting a new world’s largest thing. Even if it happens to be a prairie chicken. A booming prairie chicken, to be precise. Located in Rothsay, Minnesota, the World’s Largest Booming Prairie Chicken towers 13 feet over the rolling plains," the Olio in Iowa says.

"What, exactly, is a “booming” prairie chicken? Well, according to the statue’s plaque, “In the early spring the male prairie chicken performs his mating ritual called booming. He spreads his wings and tail feathers, inflates the orange wind sacs and struts while making the booming sound.”

"The statue was erected in Rothsay — the self-proclaimed “Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota” — in 1976 for the country’s bicentennial. Originally built by artist Art Fosse, the World’s Largest Booming Prairie Chicken received a fresh coat of paint for the town’s 125th anniversary celebration in 2008."

"Rothsay is no ordinary small town though, it boasts being home to the largest booming prairie chicken around. Weighing in at 9,000 pounds, 13’ tall and 18’ long, this is no ordinary chicken," the exploreupnorth.com says.

"Beyond its sheer size, this chicken is memorable for the puffy orange sacs that outline its head. It gets its name, booming prairie chicken, from the booming sound the male makes while puffing the orange sacs and stomping around during mating. The statue was unveiled in 1976 in celebration of America’s Bicentennial.

"This self-proclaimed “Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota” gives credit for the design and construction to Art Fosse. This is a great stop for lunch at the small park located by the statue. Enjoy your view of native prairie grass and if your lucky, maybe you will see some smaller prairie chickens scurry about."

"Rothsay is the Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota. One of the largest concentrations of the bird can be found on the meadows in the Rothsay region. Prairie chickens are famous because they represent a historical part of Minnesota History. Prairie Chickens moved ahead of the settlers to inhabit the prairies of Minnesota as they settled. This is why Rothsay chose the Prairie Chicken as the creative focal point of their city," the Creative City Developments says.

"Having the largest prairie chicken keeps Rothsay, MN on the map. The Largest Prairie chicken is advertised from the road and two gas stations prosper heavily from the extra traffic.

"The World’s Largest Prairie Chicken is little more than a giant creative statue that reflects Rothsay’s history. It is Rothsay creative focal point. The prairie chicken stop may be Rothsay, MN’s only tourist attraction, but it is rated 3.5 stars on Tripadvisor for being little more than a statue of a chicken."

"Prairie Chickens have one of the most memorable mating “dances” in the animal kingdom. The male stomps his feet while releasing a “booming” sound which is triggered from his puffy orange sacs," the Roadtrippers says.

"In honor of this interesting chicken a 13-foot tall statue was erected in Rothsay, the self-proclaimed Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota for America’s 1976 Bicentennial."

"This 9,000 pound big bird statue stands at 13-feet tall. It was created by artist Art Fosse in 1976 to celebrate the country’s bicentennial and the town’s self-proclaimed title of “Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota.” The giant chicken received a fresh coat of paint in 2008 in honor of the town’s 125th anniversary celebration," the Silly America says.

"The creature is so named for its mating dance, called, what else? Booming. In this mating ritual the male prairie chicken lets out a halting booming sound while his orange wind sacs inflate, all while while stomping his feet and spreading his wings and tail feathers.

"The World’s Largest “Booming” Prairie Chicken makes for a quick stop off of an I-94 road trip through Minnesota that is also convenient to many other world’s largest things and other Minnesota roadside attractions."

"You never know when you’re traveling from town to town when you’ll run into something really big! For example, what if you were to turn a corner and come upon a big ol’ prairie chicken? We’re talking the world’s largest prairie chicken! If you did, you’d be in Rothsay, Minnesota," the RV Travel says.

"Prairie chickens were once abundant in North America, with millions when the first settlers arrived. But by the 1930s, hunting pressure and habitat loss had driven them nearly to extinction. So when the tiny town of Rothsay (pop. 479) was designated the “Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota,” the local community decided to put up a statue.

"The statue, in the northwest outskirts of town, was unveiled on June 15, 1976, a year after Rothsay was declared (maybe self-proclaimed?) the “Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota.” In case you are interested, the big bird is 13 feet high, 18 feet long and weighs in at 9,000 pounds."
