"Atlanta is in something of a sweet spot. It’s within a two-hour flight of 80% of the US population, according to the airport, but it’s not jammed up too close to other major metro areas," the CNN reports.

"While the airport’s claim to fame is the pass-through hub traffic, it doesn’t hurt that Atlanta is a big convention, business and tourism draw, Garrow said. And when people arrive, they have the option of direct access to key areas of the city via the MARTA system. A line goes directly into the airport.

"Also, Hartsfield-Jackson has a large “catchment area” with competing airports quite a distance away, Garrow said. Larger airports such as Nashville and Charlotte are about 250 miles (400 kilometers) away – too far away to provide a whole lot in the way of competition."

"Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is yet again the busiest airport in the world, though it hasn’t quite recovered to the pre-pandemic traffic levels that made it the first airport ever to hit nine digits. The Atlanta airport saw 93.7 million passengers in 2022, shy of the historic 100 million-plus it hosted in the two years leading up to the pandemic in 2020," the Global Atlanta says.

"Hartsfield-Jackson remained 20 million passengers ahead of its closest competitor, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, which came in at 73.3 million passengers last year. It also outpaced Chicago O’Hare in aircraft movements (takeoffs and landings) another measure of airport “busyness,” according to ACI.

"Aside from Chicago, Atlanta’s stiffest competition usually comes from global airports like Beijing, London-Heathrow and Dubai, all of which have suffered from dampened international demand in the last three years."

Hartsfield–Jackson has been named the world’s busiest airport every year since 1998 — save for 2020, when China’s Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport won due to pandemic-related circumstances.

"More than 6.6 billion people flew worldwide in 2022, which is a 43.8% increase from 2021, Airports Council International said. In Atlanta, passenger volume jumped 23.8% from 2021 to 2022. "Hartsfield-Jackson is a global gateway, offering nonstop service to more than 150 domestic and 70 international destinations. These locales include major commercial centers in Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, Africa, and South and Central America.
