World’s Largest Chess Piece: world record in St. Louis, Missouri

"Saint Louis, the U.S. Chess Capital, was previously home to the world's largest chess piece from 2012 to 2014, until surpassed by a 16 foot tall chess piece in Belgium. The newly unveiled king piece on the Saint Louis Chess Campus tops the previous world record set in 2014 by nearly four feet. Saint Louis' former world record, a 14 foot king piece, will be relocated to another prominent location in the Saint Louis area," an official press release said.

"The new world record chess piece was installed just in time to preside over the 2018 U.S. and U.S. Women's Chess Championships, the country's most elite, invitation-only chess tournaments, held at the Saint Louis Chess Club from April 17-30, 2018. Saint Louis resident Fabiano Caruana, who recently became the first American to challenge for the undisputed World Chess Championship title since Bobby Fischer in 1972, will be competing against one of the strongest fields in U.S. Championship history.

"The piece was hand-carved and sculpted by R.G. Ross Construction in Saint Louis, constructed entirely of African Sapele Mahogany and finished with a tung oil sealant. In addition to its impressive height, the piece weighs more than 5 tons, totaling a whopping 10,860 pounds. The record-breaking piece will reside at the entrance to the World Chess Hall of Fame."

"The chess piece is 53 times the size of a standard "Champion Staunton" king piece. The chess piece is constructed of Sapele African Hardwood and Wood Glue. It was assembled into oversize rough blocks then sculpted using wood working tools."

"20-foot-tall chess piece stands in front of the Hall of Fame, which honors players from Bobby Fischer to Ben Franklin. The chess piece was unveiled in 2018; it replaced a 15-footer unveiled in 2012," the Roadside America says..

"Standing nearly 15 feet tall and weighing over a ton, the World's Largest Chess Piece is the latest shock to the sleepy chess world by the upstart Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis. Backed by local billionaire Rex Sinquefield, the Chess Club wants to make St. Louis the Chess Capital of America. It used its clout in 2009 to lure the World Chess Hall of Fame from its former home in Miami. The chess piece, a king, stands in front of the Hall of Fame, which enshrines luminaries from Bobby Fischer to Ben Franklin, and displays rarities such as a chess set designed by Yoko Ono.

"Nice little museum. Fun extra-large outdoor chess set along with the giant chest piece, Walk the town streets afterwards. Watch the parking meter -- the meter maids are out to get you (she got me)."

"Created by members of the World Chess Hall of Fame, this giant chess piece was certified by Guinness World Records on April 6, 2018. While the St. Louis-based group already held the world record at that time, this new attraction was created to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Saint Louis Chess Club. The 2018 season also marked a decade of St. Louis hosting the U.S. and U.S. Women’s Chess Championships," the Olio In Iowa says.

"The formidable piece took months to craft using wood glue and sanded down blocks of African Sapele mahogany. The World’s Largest Chess Piece is a to-scale replica of a “Championship Staunton” king. This style of piece was custom designed by The House of Staunton in 2013 to be used in the first invite-only Sinquefield Cup, which is held annually in St. Louis. In order to keep the proportions of the giant piece as close to the model as possible, the piece was digitally scanned and its measurements were enlarged to be 53 times bigger than the original.

"The World’s Largest Chess Piece is a must-see attraction for any chess lover. This colossal king can be found in Saint Louis’ Central West End neighborhood outside of the World Chess Hall of Fame. This area is full of chess-related spots, including the St. Louis Chess Club located just across the street and the Kingside Diner located around the corner."

Reviews from TripAdvisor

"The World Chess Hall of Fame is a fun, free rainy day activity. The museum doesn’t update its theme very frequently, so it’s not one you can regularly go back to. However, all the exhibits are well done and worth checking out!! Plus, it’s in a great spot in Central West End with plenty of free street parking."

"This was a fascinating stop. There were all kinds of chess sets on display. Who would have thought that chess could be so artsy? There was a lot of history and even some video."

"Cute little museum that’s worth a stop if you have time. The exhibit when I went was made up of past exhibits. Obviously it’s chess-based but it was a nice look into history and art and how chess has played a role."

"A small, but fascinating museum. Well worth the visit, looking at all the unique chess sets they've collected."

"We really enjoyed this three story museum type experience. The many chess sets from around the globe was very interesting. The photos and narratives throughout the famous players area was nice. The gift shop has sets for purchase from $20 to several hundred."
