World’s Largest Souvenir Travel Plate: world record in Lucas, Kansas

Lucas, Kansas, United States--The Lucas Travel Plate in Lucas, Kansas, also known as The World's Largest Souvenir Plate, a creation of Erika Nelson, has images of many of the folk art attractions in Lucas and has many small details which only reveal themselves with repeated viewing; the dish itself is 14’ in diameter, making the plate the World’s Largest Souvenir Travel Plate, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"The Lucas Travel Plate, also known as The World's Largest Souvenir Plate, is a creation of Erika Nelson, who also created the World's Largest Collection of the World's Smallest Versions of the World's Largest Things Traveling Roadside Attraction and Museum. Erika is a Lucas artist who is involved with many folk art installations across Kansas and the United States," the Kansas Travel says.

"The travel plate was erected and originally hand painted in 2006 on a 14' fiberglass satellite dish with a smaller satellite dish mounted at its center. The plate was freshened and updated when "Toilet Bowl Plaza" opened in downtown Lucas and repaired and repainted in the summer of 2018 after storm damage.

"The giant souvenir plate has images of many of the folk art attractions in Lucas and has many small details which only reveal themselves with repeated viewing. For example, the center, smaller plate is ringed with sausage links from Brant's Meat Market and the upper right hand has a tiny "flying pig" tribute to the late Eric Abraham, who had the Flying Pig Gallery in Lucas."

"That’s right, in addition to being the Grassroots Art Capital of Kansas, the tiny town of Lucas with 400 people now boasts its very own World’s Largest Thing! Honoring the multiple Outsider Art environments that have flourished in Lucas since the early 1900s, the World’s Largest Souvenir Travel Plates depict those environments alongside a visual history of the town," the Kansas Travel says.

"The dish itself is 14’ in diameter, formed from a large fiberglass satellite dish with another, smaller dish mounted inside as the center medallion. Lots of local help went into realizing the project, with the City of Lucas crew providing labor, cement, and engineering expertise and the local telephone company providing one of their decommissioned communications dishes. Funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the large travel plate was painted during September, October, and a little bit of November 2006 on-site, alongside state highway K-18.

"World's Largest Travel Plate is found along the Post Rock Scenic Byway. Over the Smoky Hills of weathered bedrock, the Post Rock Scenic Byway winds through fields, pastures, and prairie. The landscape's unique beauty and challenges required pioneers to earn their space here. And the legacy of their creativity and resourcefulness lives on. Just look at the stone fence posts for which this route was named - as functional as the day they were erected. Today, that same innovative spirit has given rise to many independently minded artists, farmers, and ranchers in the region."

"Built in 2007 out of an old satellite dish by artist Erika Nelson. The colorful plate serves as a Welcome sign, and is covered with images of all the other oddball things you can see in Lucas," the Roadside America says.

"Directions: East edge of town, on the west side of Hwy 18, just south of and across the highway from the K-18 Cafe, gas station, and airfield.

"A hailstorm damaged the plate in April 2015; it looked pretty ragged when we saw it a year later. Artist Erika Nelson, who created the plate, began restoring and repainting it in 2017. She finished a year later. Now it looks great again!"

"The World's Largest Souvenir Travel Plate was created in 2006 and 2007 as a part of a National Endowment for the Arts "Challenge America" grant," the Get Rural Kansas says.

"Utilizing a retired satellite dish as a canvas, local artist Erika Nelson created the plate as a welcome icon for Lucas, with the images coming from all the things to see and do in this tiny amazing town. "Lucas is all about quirky art, and the World’s Largest Souvenir Plate explains all about the little city on the Post Rock Scenic Byway," the Roxie On The Road says.

"Wilson Telephone donated the 14-foot satellite dish, and Erika Nelson painted the concave surface. A smaller dish is the center medallion."

"Here’s what I love about the subject of this post. Lucas is a town with a population of just 400, yet it has a website and a Facebook page! Also, it’s really close to Lebanon, KS, which is the geographical center of the contiguous United States. Look at a map and see what I mean. Nifty.

"I also think this souvenir plate, made from repurposed satellite dishes, is an über-cool example of recycling. I’m not exactly Mrs. Green, but I do shut the lights off when leaving a room — regardless of whether others are still there. This tends to bother Matt when he’s watching his DVR’d episodes of The Closer."
