World's Largest Collection of Smallest Versions of Largest Things: world record in Lucas, Kansas

Lucas, Kansas, United States--Based in Lucas, Kansas, artist Erika Nelson owns a well known van (and now a brick and mortar museum, too) which is the home of "The world's largest collection of the world's smallest versions of the world's largest things," (also known as WLCoWSVoWLT), containing miniature of giant roadside attractions, all hand-crafted by Erika: Albert the Bull, Brainerd's Bunyan and Babe, the Talking Cow, Big Brutus, the World's Largest Strawberry, the Largest Ketchup Bottle, and the Largest Ball of Yarn; the collection & museum sets the world record for being the  World's Largest Collection of World Record Memorabilia, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"Erika Nelson, creator of the World’s Largest Collection of the World’s Smallest Versions of the World’s Largest Things, travels the United States looking for “monsters of the road” (things like the world’s largest ketchup bottle or ball of yarn). She then photographs them and makes a World’s Smallest Version of said World’s Largest Thing," the Atlas Obscura reports.

"Once Nelson researches, visits, and photographs a World’s Largest Thing, she then makes a miniature replica of the “thing.” When possible, Nelson will bring the tiny version back to the enormous structure that inspired it and snap a photo of the two items together. The little replicas and photographs are then displayed in the museum and online.

"Nelson makes the World’s Smallest Versions of The World’s Largest Things from a medley of materials. For example, when replicating the world’s largest ball of rubber bands, she used the miniature rubber bands you’d find at an orthodontist’s office."

"An interactive environment devoted to the exploration and celebration of World's Smallest Versions of the World's Largest Things. This one-of-a-kind roadside attraction and museum's owner travels all over the country, stopping at World's Largest Things, community cultural centers, roadside attractions, colleges, universities, art events, and museums.

"Call ahead to see. World's Largest Collection of the World's Smallest Versions of the World's Largest Things Traveling Roadside Attraction & Museum is found along the Post Rock Scenic Byway. Over the Smoky Hills of weathered bedrock, the Post Rock Scenic Byway winds through fields, pastures, and prairie," the Travel Kansas says..

"The landscape's unique beauty and challenges required pioneers to earn their space here. And the legacy of their creativity and resourcefulness lives on. Just look at the stone fence posts for which this route was named - as functional as the day they were erected. Today, that same innovative spirit has given rise to many independently minded artists, farmers, and ranchers in the region."

"It turned out that the van is the home of "The world's largest collection of the world's smallest versions of the world's largest things," and it belongs to artist Erika Nelson," the Roadside America reports.

"Visible from its windows were dozens of miniatures, hand-crafted by Erika, of Roadside American giants: Albert the Bull in Audubon, Iowa; Brainerd, Minnesota's Talking Paul Bunyan; the Talking Cow of Neillsville, Wisconsin; Big Brutus of West Mineral, Kansas; and the World's Largest Strawberry of Strawberry Point, Iowa. Inside the van were more, along with research files, work space, publicity clippings, and a stack of offbeat travel guidebooks.

"Based in Lucas, Kansas, home of the Garden Of Eden, Erika received her masters degree with a thesis titled, "Driving Around Looking at Big Things While Thinking About Spam," and also curates a website, www.worldslargestthings.com. She lectures at colleges and describes herself as "one of America's foremost experts and speakers on the World's Largest Things." She will also consult with Chambers of Commerce that are seeking their own world's largest thing."

"The World's Largest Collection of the World's Smallest Versions of the World's Largest Things is a traveling roadside museum out of Kansas, US, by artist Erika Nelson, a pioneer of grassroots art environments, community development, and arts education.

"Visible from the windows of the van are dozens of miniature giant roadside attractions, all hand-crafted by Erika: Albert the Bull, Brainerd's Bunyan and Babe, the Talking Cow, Big Brutus, the World's Largest Strawberry, the Largest Ketchup Bottle, and the Largest Ball of Yarn. "Today, Nelson is one of the country’s premier experts on World’s Largest things, which are often erected by small towns looking for ways to put themselves on the map. “The reason they have a big thing is to celebrate something about their town and they decided to do it in a big, iconic way,” Nelson says. “Everybody can tell you the story of that monument.”

"These oversized icons are often set in small agricultural communities, and Nelson originally thought she’d find tension between the artists and the locals, or between different towns who each claimed the World’s Largest version of something. But it turns out World’s Largest communities aren’t at each other’s throats. Instead, she found some good natured ribbing," the Road Trippers reports.

"As Nelson’s collection of hand-crafted souvenirs grew, she began sharing WLCoWSVoWLT with others. One of the amazing things about the collection is its multiple iterations. The most static place to find a portion of the collection is at the Roadside Sideshow Expo in Lucas, Kansas, about 15 miles off of I-70."

"Welcome to the home base of WLCoWSVoWLT, where a museum is in progress to be a more permanent home for the collection. After all, it grows more all the time, as more World's Largest Things become part of the collection and history," the Only In Your State reports..

"It's a passion project and business created by Erika Nelson, an extremely creative artist with a love for both big and small things. After all, it does take a creative mind to visualize small versions of large scale sculptures and creations.

"Now, there's a brick-and-mortar location in Lucas that's open by accident, chance, or coincidence. It's also a work in progress, much like the collection, but you can always check when they're available by texting them at (785) 760-0826."
