Put-In-Bay, Ohio, United States--Crystal Cave in Put-In-Bay, Ohio, is 35 feet below the surface and is about 12,000-15,000 years old; discovered by workers in 1897 while digging a well for the winery 40 feet above, owned and operated by Heineman Winery; made of crystals, with geodes up to 3 feet in width, it measures a staggering 35 feet (11 meters) long, setting the world record for being the World's Largest Geode, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"Discovered by workers in 1897 while digging a well for the winery 40 feet above, Crystal Cave is the world's largest geode. The walls of this cave are covered in strontium sulfate, a blueish mineral called celestite. These crystals range from 8 to 18 inches long. The original cave was much smaller than what appears today, as crystals were harvested and sold for the manufacturing of fireworks," the official website says.

"Owned and operated by Heineman Winery, Crystal Cave helped save the family-run winery from demise during Prohibition. Tours of the cave helped pay the bills, while other wineries on the island closed.

"Tours are $12 for adults and $7 for children ages 6 to 11. Children under 6 are free. This is a combo tour or the Crystal Cave and Wine Cellar that includes a 5oz glass of the wine or grape juice of your choice. Tours run seven days a week from early May until late September. Monday through Saturday, tours of the cave begin at 11 a.m. and continue throughout the day until 5 p.m. On Sunday, tours begin at 12 p.m. and continue until 5 p.m."

"The geode was discovered in 1887, by workers digging a well for winery operator Gustav Heineman. Heineman found that the formation was in actuality a “vug,” or large cavity within a single rock," the Atlas Obscura says.

"It took its name from the three-foot-long Celestine crystals jutting from the walls, many of which have been mined in order to be used as fireworks. As a result, the cave is likely less beautiful today than it once was, though it is also roomier, and many of the crystals remain in place.

"Though the setting—the world’s largest known geode, studded with crystals—is hard to beat on its own, you may as well take advantage of the accompanying Heineman winery tour, and explore the crystal cave with a bit of a buzz."

"Visitors to the cave descend 40-feet down into the cave via a steep set of stairs. You’ll marvel as you walk straight through the geode and observe crystals that range in size from 8 inches to a foot and a half long," the Travel Inspired Living says.

"You’ll learn about the history of the cave, how workers discovered the cave in 1887 while digging a well beneath the winery and how tours of Crystal Cave single-handedly saved the winery during Prohibition.

"The original cave was much smaller than what you see today. The walls are covered with strontium sulfate, a blueish mineral called celestite that is used to make fireworks. In the early days, the celestite was mined for this purpose but Mr. Heineman put a stop to the mining when he realized that the cave could be more beneficial as a tourist attraction."

"Crystal Cave is a geological treasure on Put-in-Bay. It is home to the World’s largest geode. Strontium sulfate lines the walls of this beloved cave which is open for tour. This truly beautiful site is surely one not to miss out on. You can find the Crystal Cave near the Heineman Winery in the center of the island," the Put-in-Bay Resort & Conference Center says.

"The Crystal Cave was originally discovered by workers digging above in it 1897.  They were working 40 feet above when the ground fell into the cavern. Today, the cavern is much larger than what these men discovered. The crystals were once harvested to aid in the production of fireworks. Consequently, the cave grew in size. Now, the crystals in the cave range from 8 to 14 inches.

"This spectacular cave is located beneath the historic Heineman’s Winery. The winery is the oldest family-run winery in Ohio. Since 1888, they have been producing island wines and several of those wines have won awards in competition."

"A visit to the Crystal Cave and Heineman’s Winery is so uniquely Put-in-Bay it is not to be missed. This little island is full of natural wonders, none more so than the Crystal Cave," the Put-In-Bay says.

"The world’s largest geode can be found here. Made of crystals, the geodes are up to 3 feet in width! That is a very big crystal. This magical cave is almost otherworldly with walls covered in strontium sulfate, a bluish mineral called celestite.

"A visit to the Crystal Cave is nicely complemented with wine tastings at the Wine Garden. The Heineman Winery specializes in sweet wines but their selection is quite varied. You can purchase souvenirs from the gift shop as well as bottles to take home and give to friends."

"A literal "hidden gem" 40 feet beneath a winery -- blueish celestite crystals cover chamber walls unearthed by winery well diggers in 1897," the Roadside America reports.

"Tours of the geode are available strictly as a package deal: $7 buys a tour of "Crystal Cave," a tour of the winery, and a chip redeemable for a sample cup of wine or grape juice. Visitors descend directly into the geode's center. It is not, as some might expect, a lengthy cavern tour.

"There's a brief explanation of the history of the cave, then you go right back up the steps you came down. Complete cave and winery tour was accomplished in less than half an hour. Look for prop cave animals nestled among the crystals."

"What's so special about this beautiful cave is the fact that it's the world's largest celestite geode. The cave is made up of celestite crystals ranging anywhere from 8 to 18 inches long. As you walk through it, you'll feel like you've entered another world.
