Mentone, Indiana, United States--The Mentone Egg in Mentone, Indiana, is made of concrete, weighs 3,000 pounds, and is about 10 feet high; it was originally constructed to advertise the local egg festival; it's inscribed with " The Egg Basket of the Midwest" and a basket of eggs within an outline-shape of Indiana; it sets the world record for being the World’s Largest Concrete Egg Sculpture, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"The Indiana roadside attraction stands at 10 feet tall and weighs a whopping 3,000 pounds. The painted on Easter-worthy inscription reads, “Mentone, the Egg Basket of the Midwest” referencing the area’s abundant commercial egg production. The town even holds an annual Mentone Egg Festival each June to celebrate it’s moniker," the Silly America reports.

"The world’s biggest egg was sculpted by a group of tradesmen in 1946 to advertise an egg show and was later moved to the spot it stands to today."

"There's not much to see if you get off the Interstates and head into the flat, rural interior of north-central Indiana. But Mentone's big egg is a required detour for any serious collector of big food photo opportunities," the Roadside America reports..


"The Mentone Egg is made of concrete, weighs 3,000 pounds, and is about 10 feet high. It was originally constructed in 1946 to advertise the local egg festival. It's inscribed with " The Egg Basket of the Midwest" and a basket of eggs within an outline-shape of Indiana.


"It sits along a shrubbed strip in a bank parking lot. A shop across the street sells souvenir t-shirts; ask a friendly Mentone resident to point you towards it."

"Sitting right near the edge of town, the huge cement ovum was created in 1946 by a group of local tradesmen in order to advertise an “Egg Show.” Originally the plan was to craft the egg from thin sheet metal but it was decided that the monumental embryo would be made from concrete, weighing in at around 3,000 pounds," the Atlas Obscura reports..


"The novelty was painted white and the slogan “Mentone, the Egg Basket of the Midwest” was drawn across the surface, finally owning the strange monicker. After its initial promotional installation, the egg was installed at its current location on donated land at the meeting of Main and Morgan Streets.


"The town’s fixation with its eggy industry extends to a yearly “Egg Festival” as well, but the concrete monument remains the focal point of the area export."

"Mentone is a town in Harrison and Franklin townships, Kosciusko County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. Mentone is the self-proclaimed "Egg Basket of the Midwest" because of prolific commercial egg production in the area, and holds an Egg Festival annually in early June to celebrate its heritage.


"A large concrete egg stands near the town center and is considered locally to be the "Largest Egg in the World". The Lawrence D. Bell Aircraft Museum, is located within the town limits. The population was 1,001 at the 2010 census.

"According to the 2010 census, Mentone has a total area of 0.59 square miles (1.53 km2), of which 0.58 square miles (1.50 km2) (or 98.31%) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) (or 1.69%) is water." (

"Mentone, Indiana was founded in 1882 and is home to what the locals call the world’s largest egg – that’s no yolk! The 3,000lbs concrete egg statue stands in the middle of town and proudly proclaims the area’s nearly 140-year history of providing commercially produced eggs to stores all around the country. Hence, Mentone is known as the “Egg Basket of the Midwest.”


"Mentone with its two banks, two doctors, hardware store, shops, and churches is quaint, welcoming, and exemplifies Hoosier Hospitality. Read on to find some things to do in Mentone, Indiana," the Visit Kosciusko County says.


"According to Mentone legend, the idea of the egg was created by Ed Ward, the manager of the Northern Indiana CO-OP Association, as well as some of the egg farmers around the Mentone area. The egg was built in late 1946 and took 12 men to load it on a truck. Stop by this unique attraction and snap a few pictures in front of the world’s biggest egg."
