"Tonto Natural Bridge—the world’s largest travertine bridge–used to be a hidden gem near Payson. In recent years, however, Arizonans and visitors alike have discovered the beauty of Tonto Natural Bridge State Park—and it’s easy to understand why this spot has become such a popular destination," the Arizona Oddities reports.

"Nestled in Pine Canyon off of Highway 87, the park’s main attraction is a 183-foot high, 400-foot long travertine bridge—and the cave beneath it—that features a trickling waterfall that runs from the top of the bridge into Pine Creek.

"The park offers a variety of hiking trails under and around the bridge, all of which are under one mile. They can be steep and rocky, though, so plan accordingly. Some of the trails wind along Pine Creek to mossy waterfalls that look like they don’t belong in our desert state. Others end at viewpoints just beneath the bridge. You can also see the bridge from four viewpoints in the parking lot."

"At 161 acres, this Arizona State Park is the fourth smallest in the system, but what it lacks in acreage it makes up for in raw, natural beauty! The park's main attraction is the natural bridge, including the massive 400-foot tunnel it creates. At the widest point, the tunnel is 150-feet in width," the Only In Your State reports.

"And the park also features a waterfall at one end of the bridge opening. A waterfall, a natural bridge and a tunnel... what more do you need for a day trip that's fun for the whole family?!

"Tonto Natural Bridge State Park has three trails that all lead to the area of the bridge. Beware, they each have their own characteristics, and two of them are rated as difficult."

"Tonto Natural Bridge is a geological wonder not only because it is believed to be the largest natural travertine bridge in the world, but also because the area contains a gap in the geological record, with some 225 million years (starting 300 million years ago and ending 75 million years ago) unaccounted for in the surrounding rock formations," the Atlas Obscura reports.

"In a similarly numerically-staggering manner, consider this: a person underneath the bridge can stand with their feet on the rhyolite and their hands on the travertine, thus spanning a period of millions of years with just the length of their body."

Testimonials from TripAdvisor

"Not being much of this hiking-kind-of-a-person, but visiting this believed to be the largest natural travertine bridge is a must - if possible. It is locate somewhat in the middle between Payson and Strawberry, Arizona, on State Highway 87. It is a most beautiful country site. This park and its restrooms are clean and inviting, and even offers picnic tables and grassy areas. Just a short walk from the parking lot will lead to an overlook of this bridge, but because you will be standing on top of the bridge, it is best to take the walk down on the right to really get to admire it fully. Yes, the walk is steep in some areas, however, it offers places to rest. Best not to wear heels or flip-flops. So grab your camera, take your time to take that little hike, and you will be glad you did it."

"Staff was great and the park was beautiful. We wished there had been some longer, more technical trails in the area as it was a fairly crowded experience around the bridge."

"As an AZ resident I’ve been coming here for years. It’s an easy place to visit with out-of-town guests. Price is low, there’s lots of parking, weather is always mild. Picnic facilities. Tiny gift shop. Friendly staff. There are several overlooks that are accessible with no hiking involved. There are two main trails that go down to the creek and under the travertine bridge—one trail is the paved trail, the other is dirt. Neither are ADA accessible. They are both steep for those with mobility issues. They are also very skinny trails—it’s awkward passing someone."

"Wow, just wow! This natural bridge is amazing to see. It's very convenient when traveling from PHX to Winslow (we took the long way to Grand Canyon). The geology and views are superb."
