"A few miles to the northeast of the World's Largest Sundial, in the residential community of Tonto Hills, stands a 39-foot-tall Kachina doll, unquestionably the world's largest. We think," the Roadside America reports.

"There are other big Kachina dolls spread around the southwest. It's a familiar bit of pseudo-Native American signage for motels, drive-ins and trading posts. This one stands in a circular rock garden facing south.

"We ponder the surrounding spiny flora, the dry heated breeze, the almost solitude of the giant Kachina. There's not much else to do here; an adjacent vacant art studio is reportedly up for sale.

"Most kachina dolls are small enough to hold in your hand, but there's one at the entrance to the Tonto Hills community that's larger than life. Surrounded by mountains and desert flora, this 39-foot kachina doll is considered to be the tallest in the world.

"While there are many other giant kachina dolls scattered throughout the Southwest, none come close to the grandeur of this one. The statue is inspired by a Corn Maiden Dancer Kachina, said to purify the women who grind the corn for both ceremonial and everyday purposes," the Only In Your State reports.

"It was designed by a man named Phillip Sanderson, who used clay to build the original doll the sculpture is modeled after. Standing tall and proud, the statue serves as a guardian of Tonto Hills and the entire town of Carefree. The project took six months to complete, using a mixture of solid concrete and steel. The doll weighs a whopping 14.5 tons!"

"Hopi katsina figures (Hopi language: tithu or katsintithu), also known as kachina dolls, are figures carved, typically from cottonwood root, by Hopi people to instruct young girls and new brides about katsinas or katsinam, the immortal beings that bring rain, control other aspects of the natural world and society, and act as messengers between humans and the spirit world.

"Hopi people live primarily on three mesas in northeastern Arizona, about 70 miles from Flagstaff. In Hopi cosmology, the majority of katsinas reside on the Humphreys Peak, approximately 60 miles west of the Hopi Reservation. Each year, throughout the period from winter solstice to mid-July, these spirits, in the form of katsinas, come down to the villages to dance and sing, to bring rain for the upcoming harvest, and to give gifts to the children.

"The Heard Museum in Phoenix and the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles are now home to the major collections of Hopi kachina figures. A small collection of them can also be found in the British Museum's collection."
