"We are a family business working year round in East Glacier Park, Montana, at the base of the Rocky Mountains, on the Blackfeet Reservation. Because each of our spoons is an original work of folk art, no two of them are ever exactly alike. Each spoon that we sculpt is an adventure. For all the care and planning that goes into a design, they often surprise us and design themselves," the official website says.

"Jo carved her first spoon in 1997 and sold the first one in 1998, shortly after she and Charley moved to Montana. Since that time, the shop in our front yard in East Glacier Park has grown as have the spoon sales. Everything that Jo knows about carving has been completely self-taught, and the process that she uses has developed out of many trials and errors.

"In 2003, Jo’s husband Charley decided that what she was doing was more than just a hobby, so now he helps with the spoons full time. Charley’s daughter, Amber, joined the business in April of 2010, and we are now able to offer a limited number of our spoons on our online web store."

"This attraction is exactly what it sounds like: It's a spoon, it's purple, and it's really big," the Lee News Central says.

"Big Martha" — yes, the spoon has a name — is 14 feet tall and weighs about 200 pounds, according to the Glacier Reporter."

"Stepping inside the Spiral Spoon is like entering another dimension. Its warm wooden walls, decorated with old-time signs and slogans, feel familiar even upon first meeting," the Daily Inter Lake says.

"The shop’s graduated expansion is evident in the flooring, which transitions from old street signs in the original shopfront to traditional boards in the belly of the store. Each room is partitioned into nooks and crannies that are filled with hand-carved wooden spoons. The Spiral feels like part antique haven, part workshop, with a little Potter-esque flair added for good measure.

"There are spoons for spreading, scooping and stirring. There are massive purple spoons, spoons inlayed with precious metals, and spoons with intricately carved bear handles. There are left-handed and right-handed and doesn’t-matter-which-handed spoons. There are spoons made from a rainbow of woods — from lush ebony to rich cherry and the fickle-to-carve purple heart."

"Also known as Big Martha, this eating utensil may not be the largest spoon in the world but it certainly is the largest PURPLE spoon," the Fotospot.com says.

"What can be said, This is one big spoon: the biggest we have seen purple or otherwise. The World's Larges Purple Spoon is 14 feet tall and is mounted in a flowerbed," the Waymarking says.

" "It took about seven weeks and 200 man-hours," Wager said, adding it was local artist Bob Folsom of East Glacier who suggested a formal unveiling of the sculpture Monday. Equal to the task, Joe and Charlie put up fliers around town, leading to the unveiling. While Joe acknowledges it isn't the biggest spoon in the world (she says that one is 52 feet long, has a nine-foot cherry in it, and it lives in Minnesota), she is relatively certain hers is the biggest purple spoon, or "aubergine" as she calls it.

"Asked why the spoon is purple, Joe said there are two reasons. "First, what's the point of making a 14-foot spoon if it isn't purple?" she said. "But mostly we're making more spoons in exotic woods than before, and this one looks like it was made out of purple heart." Joe and Charlie opened the Spiral Spoon in East Glacier Park in 1999, and Joe says the business has only grown since they began. "Now we're both making spoons full-time," she said."

"There are a couple of restaurants and stores on the MT 49 portion, but nothing exciting, until you spot what very well might be the World’s Largest Purple Spoon," the TakeMyTrip.com says.

"It’s known as “Big Martha”, and stands proudly outside the Spiral Spoon store. Inside, you’ll find more spoons – a lot more – all hand made, in an incredible variety of shapes and sizes."

"If you’re heading up to the Two Medicine area of Glacier National Park, be sure and stop in at East Glacier Park Village to see the World’s Largest Purple Spoon. Located next to the Spiral Spoon (www.thespiralspoon) on MT 49, this local landmark is affectionately known as Big Martha. Crafted by Charlie and Jo Wagner, the 25-foot high utensil, which is made of plywood and Styrofoam, was unveiled on May 20, 2005," the Emerging Horizons says.

"There’s level parking in a dirt area next to the spoon, and a level path over to the Spiral Spoon. The shop itself has two small steps up into it, and if you can manage those, it’s definitely worth a look inside.

"This quaint shop offers a good selection of spoons and other implements carved by local artists. And in the back room, there’s an interesting display of vintage spoons on the ceiling, and a prop spoon that was used on the television show Bonanza in a case on the back wall."

"East Glacier Park Village may be microscopic, but it’s big enough to have two downtown business districts. One of them is on MT 49…

"… which is where you’ll find the World’s Largest Purple Spoon, affectionately known as Big Martha," the TakeMyTrip.com says.

"It’s been there at least since 2006, when I took this picture of it during my previous visit to the area. Behind the big spoon is a small storefront filled with smaller spoons, all hand-crafted. Who knew a spoon would be the perfect souvenir to take home from Glacier National Park?"
