Hayward, California

"Hayward is a city located in Alameda County, California in the East Bay subregion of the San Francisco Bay Area. With a population of 162,954 as of 2020, Hayward is the sixth largest city in the Bay Area and the third largest in Alameda County.

"Hayward was ranked as the 34th most populous municipality in California. It is included in the San Francisco–Oakland–San Jose Metropolitan Statistical Area by the US Census.

"It is located primarily between Castro Valley, San Leandro and Union City, and lies at the eastern terminus of the San Mateo–Hayward Bridge. The city was devastated early in its history by the 1868 Hayward earthquake. From the early 20th century until the beginning of the 1980s, Hayward's economy was dominated by its now defunct food canning and salt production industries."(wikipedia)

Shasta Beverages

"Shasta Beverages is an American soft drink manufacturer that markets a value-priced soft drink line with a wide variety of soda flavors, as well as a few drink mixers, under the brand name Shasta. The company name is derived from Mount Shasta in northern California and the associated Shasta Springs." (wikipedia)

"In 1931, Shasta produced its first soft drink, a ginger ale. Until the 1950s, the company's products were mainly mixers for alcoholic drinks: mineral water, club soda, and ginger ale.

"By the 1960s, Shasta was a well-known brand of sodas and mixers in most of the western United States and parts of the Southwest. During the 1960s, Shasta was purchased by Consolidated Foods (later known as Sara Lee) and was renamed Shasta Beverages. In 1985, it was acquired by the National Beverage Corp., which also owns the similarly marketed Faygo line of soft drinks."

"Outside these Shasta Beverages Plant is a giant, spinning, Shasta soda can! Currently, the one in Hayward is a Shasta Lemon Lime Twist, but, at least, in 2007 and 2008, it was a Shasta Orange. And as far back as 2005, it was Black Cherry flavored. It's easy to spot off the nearby road, and it spins round and round so you can see the entire label.

"The second giant Shasta soda can down in La Mirada is in the Los Angeles area! It is located outside Shasta's building on 14405 Artesia Boulevard. This can is currently grapefruit flavored. In 2007 it was Tiki Punch flavored, and at some other time, pineapple orange. It is rumored to also spin like the Hayward soda can, but at the time I stopped by, on a weekend, it was not spinning." Testimonials from Yelp

"Yes, Shasta Cola is still around and it's still delicious! They're also a fantastic sponsor of community events, as I discovered while planning National Night Out."

"shasta pioneered selling soft drinks in cans. I still drink an occasional "oldie" soda."

"back in the good old 80's shasta was my favorite place to take a tour. the plant in hayward was so big and offered so much to see for a junk food junkie like me who really loved soda. luckily we took some pretty sweet field trips and shasta was always on the list. from the soda making process, packaging and so much more. they always gave out the best samples and shasta toys for me to take home as well. all this fun in Hayward? who knew!"
