World’s Largest Surfboard Sculpture: world record set in Huntington Beach, California

Huntington Beach, California, United States--Orange County boat builders Westerly Marine and mold CAM of Rhode Island built a massive, 42’ 1/4” long, 11’ 1” wide and 16” thick streamlined surfboard, and finishing touches were applied by local Huntington Beach surf aficionados; the giant surfboard, not sitting in front of the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum, sets the world record for being the World's Largest Surfboard Sculpture, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"Orange County boat builders Westerly Marine and mouldCAM of Rhode Island built the massive, 42’ 1/4” long, 11’ 1” wide and 16” thick streamlined board, and finishing touches were applied by local Huntington Beach surf aficionados, the Atlas Obscura reports.


"The finished product had to be lifted into the ocean by forklift.Today, the so-called Biggest Board is proudly on display outside the International Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach, California, a town that clearly isn’t messing around when it comes to defending their title as Surf City, USA."

"The 42 1/4-foot long board towers over the museum’s parking lot and will be the business’ key attraction. In June, Huntington Beach set two Guinness World Records by having the largest surfboard and having 66 people ride it toward the coast without assistance," the Los Angeles Times reports.

Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum


The International Surfing Museum is a non-profit, 501(c) museum in Huntington Beach, Orange County, California. The museum's goal is to preserve the history of the surfing culture throughout the globe. It is dedicated to Duke Kahanamoku, who is generally regarded as the person who popularized the modern sport of surfing.

The
International Surfing Museum displays historic surfboards, provides information about legendary surfers, and shows classic surf films. Visitors can examine artistic surfing sculptures and hear surf music. Admission to the museum is currently $2 per visitor.

"Too big to fit in the adjacent Surfing Museum, the 42-foot-long board is displayed outdoors on a pole. 66 people caught a wave on it at the same time in 2015," the Roadside America reports.


"According to the plaque accompanying the surfboard, in 2015, on International Surfing Day, 66 former US Open of Surfing winners, Surfing Walk of Fame and Surfers Hall of Fame inductees, celebrities, and local Huntington Beach heroes rode a custom-built, 42-foot-long surfboard to break two Guinness World Records for: World's Largest Surfboard (42 long, 11 wide, 16 thick, 1,300 pounds), and "Most People Riding a Surfboard at Once." The 66 riders caught a wave for 12 seconds."

The GUINNESS WORLD RECORD for the most people riding a surfboard is 66, and was achieved by Visit Huntington Beach and the Epic Big Board Ride (both USA) in Huntington Beach, California, USA, on 20 June 2015.


GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS also recognized the world record for the largest surfboard logo; it was a peace sign consisting of 230 participants on surfboards at an event organised by the National Resource Defense Council, Utopia Entertainment and Kelly Chapman Meyer (all USA) at Paradise Cove in Malibu, California, USA, on 4 June 2011.
