Largest Coffee Pot: The Koontz Coffee Pot in Bedford sets world record

Bedford, Pennsylvania, United States--The 18-foot tall and 22-foot wide Coffee Pot built by David Koontz in Bedford, Pennsylvania, also know as the Koontz Coffee Pot, in tribute to it’s original builder, can now be found at 108 Telegraph Rd, Bedford, PA 15522; it's it big enough to hold over 800,000 cups of coffee, setting the world record for being the World's Largest Coffee Pot, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"Today, visitors can walk around this unique site and marvel at its size. Inside, visitors will find a small gift shop that is open periodically," The Uncovering PA reports.

"Originally, it served as a lunch spot adjacent to Koontz’s gas station. Over the years, it became a bar that was attached to a hotel, and even a bus station. Interestingly, it never served as an actual coffee shop. Inside, visitors will find now a small gift shop that is open periodically."

"Officially known as the Koontz Coffee Pot, this roadside giant looks like something you’d expect to see along Route 66. Instead, it’s located in Bedford County in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania."

"It was originally built in 1927 by David Koontz, a local gas station owner. He constructed the coffee pot of brick and metal sheeting to attract travelers along Route 30 (also known as the Lincoln Highway) to stop at his gas station, The Uncovering PA reports.

"When it was originally built, the Koontz Coffee Pot was used as a small restaurant. In 1937, it became a bar and was attached to a hotel. It also served as a bus stop, but, rather interestingly, it was never a coffee shop.

"In 2004, the Bedford Coffee Pot was moved across Route 30 to the entrance of the Bedford County Fairgrounds. And, over the years, it has been beautifully restored, The Uncovering PA reports.

"Today it once again serves as a roadside beacon to motorists, coming full circle from where it started nearly 100 years ago,"the PA Bucket list reports.

"Since the Bedford Coffee Pot is literally roadside (with parking at the entrance to the Bedford Fairgrounds), just about anyone can enjoy this kitchy throwback to the early days of motor travel."

"For lovers of Americana, travel history, and of course coffee, the Bedford Coffee Pot is a must-see!"

"It’s a cool piece of history and worth the five minute stop to take some photos," says user 'Aerowing' from Monee, IL, on Trip Advisor.

"This teapot has been around for almost a 100 years. It appears to have had many purposes over the years but after restoration and location change is now just something to look at and photo," says user Jimmy Jackk from San Marcos, CA, on Trip Advisor.

"Today, the Coffee Pot can be found at the Bedford County Fairgrounds, in much better condition than it was at the start of the millennium. The exterior is painted a shiny metallic silver, to imitate the original sheet metal paneling. Visitors may enter the building to view some of the Bedford Fair’s historical artifacts and information, which are kept on display inside. There is no restaurant inside, but the Coffee Pot is restored, protected, and open for the public to appreciate"says Jerin Miller.
