"Clothespin, a 45-foot steel sculpture by Claes Oldenburg, has inspired many reactions since its installation in 1976.

While Philadelphia City Hall is formal and ornate, Oldenburg’s quirky artwork, located just across the street, is sleek and whimsical," the Visit Philadelphia reports.

"Oldenburg linked his design for Clothespin to Constantin Brancusi’s well-known sculpture The Kiss in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Many agree that the shape of Clothespin resembles two lovers entwining."

Made of Cor-Ten steel, Clothespin is praised by art critics for its velvety texture and weathered, warm reddish-brown color.[3] The silvery steel "spring" part of the two-textured work resembles the numerals "76", apt for the United States Bicentennial year.

It was commissioned in May 1974 by developer Jack Wolgin, as part of the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority's percent for art program.
