Oldest living cultivated fruit tree: world record set by Sticea's Pair Tree
CIOHARANI, Iași County, Romania--A 613 years old pair tree (Pyrus sativa) from the village Ciohorăni, Iasi County, Romania, called by the locals "Sticea's Pair Tree", after the name of the one in whose gate he grew up, sets the world record for being the Oldest Living Cultivated Fruit Tree, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

Dr. eng. Ion Lupu, from the Dendro-Ornamental Association "Anastasie Fătu", declared for AGERPRES that in Iaşi county there are 387 secular trees, 224 of them being declared monument trees, and 160 are approved by the Romanian Academy and proposed for such a classification. Most of them are oaks or lindens.

"Although currently the condition of the fruit tree is precarious due to parasitic fungi, which over time have created a hollow six meters high, it still bears fruit ", explains Dr. Eng. Ion Lupu.

Today, a great-grandson of Stincea's lives in the house next to the Sticea's Pari Tree and he is proud of the pair that bears his name, the 'Buna Ziua Iasi' reports.

Also in Ciohorăni commune there is another secular tree, a 420 year old linden tree.

According to the expertise, "Sticea's Pair" is part of the "Pyrus Sativa" species and has a radius of the stem without bark of 65.5 millimeters. The bark is also 20 millimeters thick. The tree has a volume of 8,120 cubic meters, of which about 20 percent hollow. The tree is 12 meters high.

Experts also appreciate that the pair tree needs special care from the authorities, the 'Buna Ziua Iasi' reports.

"The phytosanitary condition of the tree is precarious due to the xylophagous parasitic fungi that over time have created a 6 meter high hollow," reads one of the reports prepared by experts.

The Mayor of the commune says that from now on he will take more care of his hair and hopes to turn it into a real tourist objective.
