World's Largest Pupusa, world record in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., United States--A giant 20-foot, 2-inch (6.15 meters) wide pupusa cooked by D.C. chefs during the Fiesta D.C. festival in Washington, D.C., has set the new world record for the World's Largest Pupusa, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"And finally, pupusas - the flat griddle cake is made of corn flour, often filled with cheese, meat or vegetables, and is a staple of Salvadoran cuisine - so much so that El Salvador has often held the Guinness World Record for the largest pupusa ever made - that is, until Saturday," the National Public Radio reports.
"Eighty chefs from across the D.C. area set a Guinness World Record Saturday by making a pupusa that is 20.2 feet in circumference. Iris Jimenez was one of them, and she joins me now in our D.C. studios. Welcome, and congratulations.
"Specifically, we've always called D.C. the District of pupusas. We have so many pupuserias - actually, 270 pupuserias in the DMV. So it only made sense that we all got together and figured out a way to do this and create this massive mega-pupusa."

"More than 80 chefs assembled at the corner of Third Street and Pennsylvania Avenue Northeast with one goal in mind: break the Guinness World Record for biggest pupusa. After four and a half hours, the chefs succeeded, with a 20 foot, 2 inch prize to show for it," The Eagle Online reported.
"The dedicated group of chefs looking to break the record for the world’s biggest pupusa gathered for the Fiesta D.C. Festival, an annual celebration of Latin heritage in D.C. One of the chefs involved with the project, Juan Blanco, owns several restaurants in the area and has spent 26 years producing pupusas.
"Blanco explained the world record pupusa was made with 400 pounds of a corn based dough referred to as masa, 200 pounds of cheese, 80 pounds of a traditional pork filling called chicharron and 50 pounds of an edible Salvadoran flower named loroco."

"The largest pupusa is 6.15 m (20 ft 2 in) in diameter, and was achieved by Fiesta DC (USA) in Washington, District of Columbia, USA, on 28 September 2024," the
Guinness World Records says.
"The attempt was attended by DC Mayor, who cut and served the first ceremonial pieces of the pupusa. The pupusa was served with curtido, a traditional Salvadoran cabbage slaw."
"A pupusa is a thick griddle cake or flatbread from El Salvador and Honduras made with cornmeal or rice flour stuffed with one or more ingredients including cheese, beans, chicharrón, or squash.
"It can be served with curtido and tomato sauce and is traditionally eaten by hand. Pupusas have origins in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica but were first mentioned in 1837 by Guatemalan poet José Batres Montúfar. In El Salvador, the pupusa is the national dish[2] and has a day to celebrate it.
"A pupusa is a handmade maize or rice tortilla stuffed with ingredients. Traditional stuffings can include cheese, refried beans, squash, loroco, and chicharrón. Variants can also be stuffed with shrimp, chicken, avocados, or jalapeño peppers, among other ingredients.[6] Pupusas can be served alongside curtido (a type of spicy coleslaw), tomato sauce, plantains, tamales, and vegetables. Pupusas are cooked on comals and are traditionally eaten by hand." (Wikipedia)
"Dozens of D.C. area chefs worked together to finish the record-breaking pupusa — clocking in at 20 feet in diameter — and shortly after being certified as the record-breaker, the stuffed flat breads were already being served up to members of the community," the
WTOP says.
"Led by Iris Jimenez, owner of La Casita Pupuseria, a team of 80 chefs successfully broke the previous record Saturday afternoon. Jimenez said the team started the challenge early Saturday on a comal — Spanish for a smooth, flat griddle — that was specially built for the effort.
"The pupusa, organizers said, involved “traditional ingredients—corn masa, cheese, beans and chicharrón—on an unprecedented scale, demonstrating the skill, dedication and passion of everyone involved.” Ingredient that Jimenez said were only part of making a delectable pupusa."
"A team of about 80 Salvadoran chefs from across the Washington, D.C., area came together at the Fiesta D.C. festival to cook up the world's largest pupusa," the UPI says.
"Fiesta D.C., an annual event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, hosted the Guinness World Record attempt with the chefs starting work Saturday morning on Constitution Avenue.
"The pupusa, a flat griddle cake made from corn flour and filled with cheese and pork, measured 20 feet, 2 inches wide, enough to take the Guinness World Records title. The previous record-holder, which measured 18 feet wide, was made in El Salvador in 2022."
"A team of Salvadorian American chefs have officially set a new Guinness World Record for the largest pupusa. The team of over 80 chefs gathered on Saturday morning at Fiesta DC at 11 a.m. to make a 20-foot mega pupusa<" the
FOX 5 DC says.
"The chefs successfully managed to make a 20 foot, 2 inch delicious pupusa after hours of hard work. The previous world record was a whooping 18-feet."
"The world's largest pupusa is a record-breaking 20-foot, 2-inch (6.15 meters) wide pupusa cooked by D.C. chefs during the Fiesta D.C. festival on September 28, 2024.
