Most Awarded Wine, world record set by Romania's 'Grasa de Cotnari'

COTNARI, Iasi County, Romania--Romania's 'Grasa de Cotnari' wine, a Romanian wine variety associated with the Cotnari wine region, in Iași County (historical region of Moldavia), where it has been grown ever since the rule of Prince Stephen the Great (1457–1504), won 144 Gold and 61 Silver medals in international competitions past years alone, thus setting the world record for the Most Awarded Wine, according to the WORLD RECORD ACADEMY.

"Grasă de Cotnari' is usually a botrytised sweet wine (although semi-sweet varieties are also made) and usually has a high residual sugar content, sometimes as much as 300g/liter. The harvest of 1958 reached the maximal sugar content in the history of this wine of about 520g/liter.

"Grasa de Cotnari, sweet raisin wine, is considered a "jewel of Romanian wine making”, the experts arguing that "the secret of this wine lies in the late harvest of grapes when the sugar content is at the peak of concentration mainly due to proliferation of the noble rot”.

"During the reign of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the first ruler of Romania (1859-1866), Cotnari wines participated for the first time at an international competition. Thus, in Paris, Grasa de Cotnari was awarded the ultimate distinction.

"Over time, both Grasa de Cotnari and other Cotnari wines have won a large number of distinctions in international and national wine competitions where they were present.

"The 'Grasa de Cotnari' wine is made primarily from a grape variety also called Grasă de Cotnari or Grasă (an old white grape cultivated in the Furmint group), although some additional Fetească Alba is allowed. It is produced from grapes that fully reached and exceeded their maturity, hence the high residual sugar content.

"Cotnari wines have exceptional qualities obtained by limiting average grape production to one hectare to just 70-80% compared to other vineyards in Romania or in wine-growing countries."

A carefully made
Grasă de Cotnari is a golden yellow wine, and in spite of its residual sweetness should retain a fine acid structure and 11,5-14% alcohol by volume. It ages well, its color darkens from pale yellow to reach a dark yellow with an orange note in it.

"A good Grasă de Cotnari should have a distinct bouquet of apricot, walnut and almond and should be drunk chilled at about 10-12 degrees Celsius."

"Grasa de Cotnari is the standard variety of Cotnari Vineyard. Unique in the world, for over ten years it has been the best-selling wine in Romania. In the glass it develops a complex, conquering aroma, of dried apricots, of beeswax, with distinct notes of raisins, underlined by the contribution of the noble mold.


"The full taste is dominated by walnut kernels and raisin jam, with a light shade of sweet almonds, says Sergiu Nedelea, sommelier. It is a good accompaniment to fish dishes, chicken, seafood, selected cheeses, pasta with white sauce or can be an invigorating appetizer."

"Cotnari SA is a Romanian wine-producing company. Its history begins in 1948 when the State Agricultural Enterprise (IAS) Cotnari was founded from the merger of the State Agricultural Farm (GAS) Cotnari, a producer of grapes and wine, with GAS Deleni, which had fruit tree plantations and was engaged in sheep breeding.


"Based on Government Decision no. 266/1991, IAS Cotnari was privatized and Cotnari SA was founded. In 2000, Cotnari was left with only grape production, winemaking and wine marketing. In 1948, the company owned an area of ​​2,000 ha. Today, the company owns 900 ha and leases 800 ha.


"The producer's portfolio includes the following wine ranges: Anotimpurile Cotnari, Clasic, Cotnari, Etichetă galbenă, Selecții, Vin de spirit and Vinoteca.
